【題目】 On the level of everyday usage a myth is a false story or belief. A myth is something that is not correct, but many people believe. There are a lot of myths about the human brain.

One of the biggest myths is that we only use 10 percent of our brains. The next part of the myth is that if we can learn to use the rest of our brains, then we’ll be much smarter. People say this all the time, but it’s absolutely not true! The truth is that although we don’t know everything about the human brain, we know that each part of it has an important function (功能). Modern scientists think the “10 percent myth” ridiculous (荒謬的).

The other most popular myth is about being “right brained” or “l(fā)eft brained”. According to this myth, people who use the right side of their brains are more artistic and creative. People who use the left side of their brains are better at math and science. This is as popular as the 10 percent myth, and it’s also wrong. In 2013, a study at an American university examined the right brain and left brain myth. According to the study, we use both sides of our brains equally (相等地).

It’s true that we use different parts of our brains for different things. We use our left side for language more, and our right side when we need to pay attention. But there is no evidence (證據(jù)) that creative people use the right side more, or that scientific people use the left side more.

We’ve talked about myths, so let’s look at a few interesting facts about the brain. First of all, the brain feels no pain. Second, about 75 percent of the brain is made of water. It’s also the fattest organ in your body. Here’s another interesting fact about the brain. Around the time you turn 18 years old, it stops growing.

1What do modern scientists think of “10 percent myth” of the brain?

2What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

3May Robert, who is learning English, use the right brain more or the left brain more?

4According to the facts mentioned in the passage, when does the brain stop growing?

5What is the passage mainly about?

【答案】

1Ridiculous.

2The right brain and left brain myth.

3He may use the left brain more.

4Around the time we turn 18 years old.

Exchange Visit!

Hi there, Li Lei!

I'm really excited about going to be at your school for the exchange visit later this year—hope you are too!

But the thing is, I really don't want to do the wrong thing while I'm there and especially at the school, so I'm wondering if you could tell me a bit about the rules, about phones, clothes, food...

Could you send me a quick email? I'd love to hear from you.

Love,

Bruce

【題目】 Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.

A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.

Musicians hear better, says study leader Nina Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. For example, when the violinists play in an orchestra(管弦樂(lè)隊(duì)), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore(忽視)the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.

Gotfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中風(fēng))patients.

Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally However, they can till sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.

So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.

1What were the people in the first group asked to do in the study of Northwestern University?

A.Listen to different kinds of music.B.Make some noise in an empty room.

C.Give the second group musical training.D.Find out what the talking person was saying.

2The writer uses the example of violinists in Paragraph 3 to explain________.

A.how musicians play in an orchestraB.how musicians ignore certain sounds

C.why musicians have better hearing abilityD.why musicians are not afraid of loud noise

3Gottfried Schlaug helps his stroke patients speak by________.

A.playing music for themB.getting them to sing words

C.teaching them to play instrumentsD.joining the bad parts of their brain

4What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To introduce different ways of playing music.

B.To give some advice about making our brain active.

C.To show the relationship between music and language abilities.

D.To share the results of recent studies on treating stroke patients.

【題目】 Belinda George, 42, a principal (校長(zhǎng)) at Homer Drive Elementary in Beaumont, Southeast Texas, opens Facebook live on her phone at 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday. As she reads a children's book in her living room, anyone who goes to the school's Facebook page can watch live. Each Tuesday she wears a pair of nightclothes and reads to her students herself, which soon gets a lot attention. As she reads, everyone watches carefully. Since Belinda has gotten some media attention, parents and children from across the country also join in.

Many parents watch along with students. It's also interactive because Belinda asks questions as she reads full of passion. Since she became principal this school year, students have read more and written better. "We've already seen progress," she said, "I have deep understanding of growing up in a poor family.
