Today Newtown is a clean place, but many years ago there were millions of rats there. The rats even attacked (攻擊 ) the cats and dogs. Sometimes many of them tried to bite men or women at night. The rats were very large in size and they harmed (傷害 ) many people.
The city office ordered every one to kill rats. However, most people were lazy, so they did not kill many rats. The city office could do nothing with the citizens and could do nothing with the rats, either. Some time later, they had to pay some money for each dead rat. That made the people very happy. They at once began to kill rats. They got as many dead rats as they could. And some of them even stopped their own work to kill rats because they could get more pay. Every day a city official(官員 ) put all the dead rats together. He was very busy doing that, because sometimes a man brought hundreds of them in one day. Two weeks later, there were not so many rats in the city as before,  but people still brought many dead rats to the city office. The city officials felt surprised at this but at last they found out people were stealing the dead rats they had collected. Everyone has got two personalities(性格)the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control your behavior, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their positions. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to displease people. So you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t quite sure of yourself.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgment, but you don’t raise your hopes too much. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
If you sleep curled up(蜷縮), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You’re easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well—balanced personality. You know your strengths and weakness. You’re usually careful. You believe in yourself. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get sad. You always say what you think even if it makes people rather angry

Spending two or three hours playing outdoors each day can reduce(減少)a child’s chance of becoming short-sighted(近視),research shows . It challenges the belif that short-sightedness is caused by computer use , watching TV or reading in weak light .
Australian government researchers believe that sunlight is good for people’s eyes . They compared the vision (視力)and habits of 100 seven-year-old children in China and Australia .In all,30% of the Chinese children were short-sighted .This percentage was ten times higher than Australian children.
Both groups spent a similar amount of time reading, watching TV and playing computer games .However , the Australia children spent an average of two hours a day outdoors ,90 minutes more than the Chinese children.
Professor Ian Morgan said ,“Humans are naturally long-sighted ,but when people begin to go to school and spend little or no time outdoors ,the number of short-sighted peoplegets larger. We are also seeing more and more short-sighted children in cities all around the world –and the main reason may be that city children spend less time outdoors .

A ban on smoking in most public places goes into effect(效果) on Sunday in China - home to a third of the world's smokers. That means around 300 million smokers will no longer be allowed to light their cigarettes in the "enclosed public places." These include hotels, restaurants, theaters and public transport waiting rooms. The ban does not cover offices or factories.
The campaign is aimed at controlling(控制) the number of deaths from smoking-related illnesses, running at a million a year. According to the World Health Organization, more than 3,000 people die every day in China because of smoking. Health experts also hope it will help Chinese to raise the knowledge of the dangers of smoking.
But the new rules have been criticized because they do not include punishments(處罰) for those who choose not to obey them. Most people worry that Chinese smoking ban may have little effect.
Business owners often hate rules that force(強迫) them to ban smoking on their restaurants, bar, cafe..., because many customers(顧客) do not like the rules and complain. Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar.
It appears that many Chinese people don’t know the dangers of smoking. Research suggests only one in four knows the harm(害處) cigarettes or second-hand smoke can cause.
