On July2, 1937, Amelia Earhart( an American pilot) and Fred Noonan left New Guinea for Howland Island in the Pacific. This was the longest and most dangerous part of their t  1   around the world. Earhart had trouble soon after the plane took off. The weather was very bad, so she had to f  2   at 3,000 metres. Going this high, the plane used fuel quickly.

After about 20 h   3  , Earhart and Noonan got close to Howland Island. The island was o  4  about 65 miles (英里) away, but the bright sun was shining in their faces so they couldn’t see it. Near Howland, a ship was w  5   for the plane. Earhart contacted the ship: “We don’t have enough fuel,” she said. The ship tried to stay in touch with her b  6   got no answer. Finally, the ship called for help. People looked for Earhart and Noonan for days. However, they found nothing.

What happened to Amelia Earhart? No one knows for sure. D  7   the flight, she probably moved in the wrong direction(方向) because the sun was bright and it was d  8   to see. So she got lost; soon after, her plane ran out of fuel, and she died at sea. Another idea is that she survived(幸存) the plane crash(飛機失事), s to a lonely island, and later died there. Still other think she survived the crash and secretly returned to the U.S. with a new identity(身份).

Till now, none of these i  10   has been proved. People are still wondering about them. (Noonan’s body has never been found either.) No matter what happened, Earhart probably died as she wished. “When I go,” she said, “I’d like best to go in my plane.”

Do you remember your dreams? Do people have the same dreams? Why do we dream? There are many questions about dreams. We dream during the REM(rapid eye movement) stage of sleep. We have about five periods of REM sleep during the night. The first REM cycle(周期) lasts about 10 minutes. As the night goes on, the REM cycle gets longer. By early morning, the REM cycle can last up to 90 minutes. Usually, it is in this last REM cycle that we remember our dreams.

Dreams change as people age. People may have several dreams each night. Some are like films and usually in colour. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something and trying to find the answer. Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can’t remember the dreams clearly.

It is reported that too much dreaming is bad for our health. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work. That is why we may have a long sleep and still feel tired when we wake up.

(   ) 1. We dream during the REM stage of sleep.

(   ) 2. Children aged eight or nine have the same dremas as people aged thirty.

(   ) 3. All the dreams are usually in colour like films.

(   ) 4. The longer we dream, the better we sleep.

(   ) 5. The passage above is talking about dreams.
