Answer the following questions.

An old carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer(雇主)of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more relaxing life with his wife and children. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They thought they could support themselves for the rest of their life.

The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house. The carpenter said yes,but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He turned to bad workmanship and used poor building materials.

It was an unlucky way to end his working life. When the carpenter finished his work and the employer came to see the house,he handed the front door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said," my gift to you."

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house,he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted(不專(zhuān)注的)way, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized that,we would have done it differently.

It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to lived with dignity(尊嚴(yán)).

The sentence on the wall reads,"Life is a do-it-yourself project. "Who could say it more clearly?Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and choices you make today.

1.The old carpenter lived quite a rich life with his wife and children, didn't he?

2.Why did the old carpenter want to retire?

3.What did the old carpenter's employer ask him to do before he retired?

4.How did the carpenter do the job his employer asked him to do?

5.How did the carpenter feel when he realized that the last house be built was his home?

Also, people eat special foods on that day. The foods are usually named after dragons. For example, people eat “dragon whisker (細(xì)須)” noodles and dumplings called “dragon teeth”.

Growing a Family Business Every Saturday and Sunday this fall, while other kids are sleeping in or preparing for a soccer game, Phillip Gargiulo, age 11, will be up at 5 a.m. sweeping floors. It's hard work, but Phillip's job at Masker Orchards(果園) isn't just a job-it's all for his family.

Masker is one of the largest pick-it-yourself apple orchards in the New York area, with 200 acres(英畝) of land and 16,000 trees. The orchard was founded in 1913 by the Masker family. In 1969, Phillip's grandfather bought the land. His three kids and six grandkids have been running the family business ever since.

On a good weekend, there will be more than 800 customers. One of Phillip's jobs is to count the items they bought, give customers a total, and take their money. That's a lot of apples-and a lot of math! And more than 100 teens work there, too. For their hard work, the Gargiulo kids are paid﹩15 per hour. After working there for seven years, Phillip has saved﹩3,000. He's planning to use it to buy a car one day, and to help pay for college.

Having a family business means much more than making money. It also means making sacrifices.

"Growing up, it was good and bad," says Phillip's mom. She's been working at the orchard since she was 4 years old. "From August to Halloween, I would be busy. In high school, you want to be with your friends, out doing other things. That wasn't always possible when I had to be at the orchard."

Phillip, too, sees both sides. "I'm learning how to run a business, and I'm learning what hard work is really all about." he says. He admits, though, that some mornings, when his alarm clock goes off in the early morning, he'd rather be sleeping in or playing baseball with friends. "But I'm learning to do things that I will need for the rest of my life," he says. "And I'm spending time with my family. I love it."

1.Phillip gets up early every weekend to ______ .

A.finish his homework B.do the work for his family

C.prepare for a soccer game D.go for a run in the morning

2.What does Phillip do on a good weekend in Masker?

A.To plant some apple trees.

B.To work on math problems.

C.To play baseball with friends.

D.To count apples and take the money.

3.What can we learn from this passage?

A.Getting something probably means giving up something.

B.It's necessary to make money as early as possible.

C.Growing up means doing what you want to do.

D.There is nothing more important than parents.

Have you or your friends ever talked about studying abroad? It's becoming a common topic of discussion in China. More students are studying abroad than ever before.

Last year, 662,100 Chinese went abroad to study, a growth of 8.83 percent from 2017. For parents who send their children abroad to study, 43 percent of them hold regular jobs. With quick economic (經(jīng)濟(jì)的) growth and rising income levels (收入水平), China's people have more chances to open their eyes and have more life experiences.

Seventy years ago, however, the picture was different. Thousands of students and science and technology experts(專(zhuān)家) had to have a competition with each other to win a chance to study abroad. It was a valuable and unusual experience for people back then.

In 1984, Wang Huiyao, who later built a non-governmental think tank (智庫(kù)) that mainly pays attention to Chinese public policy and globalization (全球化), went to study at the University of Windsor in Canada. He found that while Chinese people knew little about the outside world, Westerners also knew little about Chinese people. "They even asked to touch my head to see if anything was different," he said.

But today, there are fewer of these misunderstandings. With more exchange programs, Chinese students get more chances to share their life stories with people from different cultures. Ma Ying, a15-year-old Beijinger, took a short 7-day study trip to the UK. Attracted by the culture there, she decided to stay and study in the country. "I talked to my parents, and they supported my decison. I'm happy to study more English, understand their humor, and slowly go the local lifestyle," she said.
