Tuesday, 1st September
I had mixed feelings today, nervous, worried, happy, excited... My went down when Miss Chen, our head teacher, said that Matthew and Beth, two from England, would spend three months with us! I was that I had to speak English so much! But at the end of the school day, I was happier than I thought: the morning with them today was more enjoyable than I expected.
Today is the most unforgettable first day I have had! Malthew is fantastic! His English is clearer and easier to listen to than I thought. Another English student, Beth, is the most helpful girl I'vc ever met. There were lots of things to do the first day. Beth offered to help Miss Chen all the notices. Of course, some of the credit (功勞) should also go to me I translated some of the notices for her. Miss Chen praised us!
We finished all the preparations 10 minutes earlier than expected, then Beth and I talked for a while. Matthew sang several English songs and did some stand-up comedy (單人喜劇表演) at the party. We all him. When the bell rang to the first school day, none of us wanted to leave.
When I went back home, I felt happy. I have probably spoken more today than the whole of last year.
It was a happy day! I hope our friendship can continue, even after they have gone back to England!

A Famous Writer
In her speech to Harvard students in 2008, J.K.Rowling said, “…seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale.”She went on to say that “by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.”
It might surprise some readers to know which period of her life J.K.Rowling was talking about here. She is talking about her life when she was writing the first novel of the Harry Potter books. The idea came to her during a train ride in 1990. In December that year, her mother died. The next few years were difficult for her. In 1993, her first but short marriage ended. She didn’t have much money and life was not easy. As she said in that same speech, “That period of my life was a dark one and I had no idea that there was going to be…a kind of fairytale resolution.”
As we all know now, the Harry Potter books went on to become extremely successful and also made her very rich. So where does think this success came from? She thinks it is a direct result of her early failures. As she went on to say, “Failure meant I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that really mattered to me… I was set free. ”
Her Harry Potter series was completed with its final book in 2007. The books have become a very successful film series and three years after the final book was published, a Harry Potter theme park opened in the United States. She has written other books related to the Harry Potter series and her first book for adults was published in 2012. She has also remarried and now has three children.

Music has always been an important part of Chinese people’s life. People enjoy listening to music at home and in concerts halls. As time goes by, music changes.
Traditional music is part of our culture, so it often stays with us for a long time. Many of the traditional Chinese songs have been around for many years. Young musicians learn songs from older musicians and the music changes only very little. Modern Chinese music, which is loved by many young people, however, is mainly pop music. That means the songs will be popular for a short time and then replaced by new songs. Today’s musicians write new songs every year and we hear new songs on the radio every day.
Before radio and TV were invented, music could only be heard live — that is you had to go places where musicians gave performances. The best musicians were very busy, so it was difficult and often expensive to hear really good music. For most people, the best chance to hear good music was during a festival or at a wedding. Today, people hear music all the time. Radio and TV play songs every day and night and you can even hear music played on the street.
One thing that hasn’t changed very much is what the songs are about. Both modern and traditional Chinese songs are about love and life. Some songs tell stories about past and some are about the news or the future. All of the songs have something to do with what it means to be a human being.
Music, traditional or modern, Chinese or international, seems to be a world language that everybody can understand and enjoy. Music changes and styles come and go, but nothing changes our love for good music.
