Australia is a country of immigrants(移民). Around 50 percent of students in Melbourne come from other countries. Therefore, we read many articles about foreigners’ lives in Australia. Teachers ask us to find our own identity (身份) from these articles. In the course English as an Additional Language, we read a picture book called Tales from Outer Suburbia by an Australian writer Shaun Tan.

The book has lots of short stories. Among them, I like Inner Courtyard(內(nèi)庭,內(nèi)院) best. It is about an Italian family. They moved to Australia, but they couldn’t fit into the new environment and complained a lot. However, one day they found an inner courtyard by accident. The things in it were from their home country. Then the secret courtyard became a little paradise (天堂) for them. They relaxed, played games and had a picnic there.

As an international student, I totally understand the value(價(jià)值) of the inner courtyard for every family, especially an immigrant family. I face the same problems when I study and live in Melbourne. Everything is different, including language and habit, and I have to fit into all of it. It’s so painful that sometimes I miss China very much. That’s why we need the inner courtyard to have a rest and escape from reality (現(xiàn)實(shí)) for a while. For me, it’s my bedroom. I decorate it with postcards of China and Chinese books. I collect some Australian souvenirs (紀(jì)念品), which make my inner courtyard colorful.

Last week, I watched a film called Coraline with my friends. The horror film is based on the book Coraline by British writer Neil Gaiman. But here is the thing: children had better watch this film with adults.

In the film, a young girl named Coraline has moved into her new home with her family. This might sound fun, but her parents are boring. They hate mud and do not let her play in the garden. They cook terrible food, and worst of all, they don’t talk to her often because they are both busy working.

However, things begin to change after Coraline finds a small hidden door and a road leading her to a new world. Everything is perfect there. Her parents are funny and they buy her everything she wants. Coraline is really happy, but one thing worries her ---- all the people there have buttons for eyes. One day, Coraline is asked if she wants to put buttons into her own eyes so that she can stay in this wonderful world forever. While she is thinking about this, she discovers something terrible. She has to do something to save her family.

Coraline tells an amazing story. It has given me a great lesson ---- be careful with what you wish for. I personally don’t think it is that scary, though some people might. This film was made through the stop-motion animation, which means the characters were all made out of clay models and the motion was filmed one frame at a time. It must have been hard to make this film.

1.What type of film is Coraline?

A.A romantic film. B.A science fiction film.

C.A horror cartoon. D.An action film.

2.The writer thinks children should watch Coraline with adults because ________.

A.they may feel bored with it B.it might be a little bit scary

C.they aren’t allowed to watch it alone D.it’s attractive to both children and adults

3.Why don’t Coraline’s parents talk to her very often?

A.Because they don’t have a good relationship.

B.Because they are busy with their work.

C.Because they don’t love their daughter at all.

D.Because they are often angry with Coraline.

4.From the third paragraph we know that ________.

A.people in the new world don’t have eyes.

B.Coraline wants to stay in the new world forever.

C.Coraline would like to change her eyes into buttons.

D.Coraline finally realizes that the new world is dangerous.

5.What can’t we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The film was really difficult to make. B.The writer thinks the film isn’t very scary.

C.The film is popular all over the world. D.The writer has learned something from the film.

Top Customer Reviews

★★★★★My kids loved this book!

By L. Markovitz

This book is very easy to understand for kids and helpful if you want them to understand why you want them to eat certain foods. It also explains food groups on a level they can understand.

★★☆☆☆The book is great except the page that says most of your food should be grains(谷物).

By Sycamore Sewing

The book explains the nutrition you receive and which part of your body it feeds. But when it says that you get all of your energy from things like cereal and bagels, it doesn't look right. I just don't agree on it.

I would recommend this to any Mom! It tells Moms what is healthy food.
