In mid-June. school is out and nature has burst into life.It seems like the sun never sets. In fact, in the north of Sweden it doesn’t, and in the south only for an hour or two. This calls for celebration! Friends and family gather for the most typically Swedish tradition of all: Midsummer

At Midsummer, many begin their five-week holidays and everyone is in a hurry to get things done during the short summer season. Midsummer Eve is celebrated in the countryside. As always—and on the day before, everyone leaves town, everything closes and the city streets are suddenly quiet

Sweden's Midsummer festival takes place on the longest day of the year. The holiday celebrates the summer solstice (夏至). It holds enough tradition and fun to last the rest of the year.

Swedes like the world to be well-ordered, so Midsummer Eve is always on a Friday between 19 and 25 June. People often begin the day by picking flowers and making wreaths(花環(huán))to place on the maypole(五月柱),which is a key part in the celebrations. People in colorful clothes dance around the maypole and sing songs.

Today, locals continue the tradition of weaving crowns(花冠) from green leaves and flowers.

Girls still pick seven different kinds of flowers to place under their pillows. According to local legend, if so, they will then dream of their future husbands.

In Sweden, every year many people enjoy themselves in fairy-tale scenes: peaceful lakes, amazing forests, and grassy paths. They walk through chest-high wild flowers and get close to nature. Finally they get a chance to slow down and enjoy Scandinavia’s short summer.

【題目】 Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn the child to keep away from the fire that had burnt him or her before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out.

In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: a plane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the wood in your roof , and they later may fall on you , or you may get cancer!

The important thing is not to let fear rule you , but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.

In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is OK.

In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent a plane from crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no plants. In this case , fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you , and you have to try to overcome it.

1Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if ________.

A.they were given no warning beforehandB.they didn't have any sense of pain at all

C.they had never burnt themselvesD.they felt afraid of the fire

2A really fearless soldier ________.

A.is of a little use to his armyB.is not afraid of battles at all

C.is nothing but a dead soldierD.is easy to get killed in a battle

3People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding dangers because ________.

A.they are warned of the danger and take quick action

B.they are quick both in mind and in action

C.they are calm in face of danger

D.they have gained much experience

4It is implied but not stated that ________.

A.fear is always something helpful

B.too much fear is harmful

C.fear should be used as a servant and guide

D.fear is something strange and particular

Many hundreds of years ago, a native (土著的) American chief named Shenandoah lived with his people in what is now the state of Virginia. Very l1 is known about Shenandoah, but the soft sound of his name was given to a river. The Shenandoah River still runs in a d2 valley (山谷) between the mountains in West Virginia, just as it did when Chief Shenandoah lived. There is an old story which tells how the river got its name.

A long time ago, many c3 before Europeans went to live in America, there was a great lake hidden in the mountains of Virginia. For hundreds of years, the native Americans lived near this lake, feeding on the f4 they caught in its clean waters. On a clear, starry night you could see thousands of stars s7 and dancing on the water below. The native Americans loved this lake, and because they could see the stars in it they called the lake “Clear Daughter of the Stars.” In their l8 the word for this was “Shenandoah.”

One day there was a loud crashing sound at one end of the lake. The lake began to disappear. Its water r9 out of the vallev through a break (裂口) in the mountain side. The waters ran on and on until they j10 another river, which today is known as the Potomac.

At last, the lake was gone. In its place was only a river. It is this way today. The lake is gone, but the beautiful Shenandoah River runs on.

【題目】 Success does not belong to a select group of individuals (個(gè)人). Success belongs to those who are willing to go after it and try their best to do what they have to do. Here are some useful practical ways for you if you want to be a success.

Desire. Desire is the strong wish to achieve a goal. Without desire you have nothing. Before you can run with desire, your goal must be plain, clear, and it must also be exciting.

Show up. Seventy percent of success in life is showing up. You can’t have a best seller, if you have never written a book. You can’t get your dream job, if you’re afraid to turn in an application. Showing up doesn’t guarantee(保證) success, but if you don’t show up, you won’t succeed.

Fail. Unless you’re willing to have a try, fail unhappily, and have another try, success won’t happen. To have success you have to do things the right way, but often the only way to do something right is to first fail at it. As Thomas J. Watson said, a simple formula (公式) for success is to double your rate of failure (失敗). So welcome failure, become a student of failure, learn from failure, and soon you will succeed.

Work Harder. Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day. Success is not about doing what the common person can’t do. It’s about doing what the common person is unwilling to do. And on a deeper level, it’s about creating habits that the common person is unwilling to create. It’s the habit of doing things with excellence that causes success.

Enjoy the Journey. Success is a journey, not a destination (終點(diǎn)). Success is not a certain car or a certain house or a certain happy marriage. Success is the enjoyment of the journey. You have to enjoy the journey.

Someone once said, “Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.” You have to change, you will change, and you will succeed.

1Which of the following is NOT mentioned in achieving success?

A.Working hard.B.Good education.C.Strong desire.D.Enjoying failure.

2What does the writer really mean by saying “Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day.” ?

A.It’s not easy for people to develop their health.

B.You are sure to meet with some difficulty in your life.

C.Keeping working harder is necessary when you go after success.

D.Most people don’t want to spend too much time running.

3Which of the following is TRUE about success according to the passage?

A.If you want to succeed, you should have special talents.

B.If you want to succeed, you’d better not show up.

C.Success is about doing what the common person can’t do.

D.Success means the enjoyment of your gain or loss on the journey.

4The best title of the passage might be________.

A.The Importance of SuccessB.The Meaning of Success

C.Success or FailureD.The Five Main Steps to Success

5We can find the article in the ________ part of a newspaper .
