【題目】Read the passage and answer the questions:
Our local Community (社區(qū)) Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town. I have been a member for four years now and I've taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have even made a video.
But it isn't all just enjoyment. We have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a special support group to help young people stop smoking.
We are especially proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local home for the elderly. This idea came from a school visit to a home for the elderly. My class spent an afternoon at the home and everyone found the visit very rewarding (有意義的).
The old people at the home were excited by our visit. They were very talkative (健談的) and they told us their personal stories. During our visit, the home was full of the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea together. But we realized that life wasn't always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very unhappy. They couldn't go outside and the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives.
Many young people like me have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in the homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.
Since the creation of our visiting group over twenty volunteers have joined us. Up to now, we have organized three group evening parties and a concert. But I think the individual (單獨的) visits are the most important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding.

【題目】New Distractions (使人分心的事)
Madeline’s family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new_________: no phones allowed for the entire week. “No distractions,” they said.
“But my friends will be_________updates,” Madeline protested (抗議). ”
“They’ll have to_________,” her mom said.
“What if something bad happens?” Madeline changed her strategy (策略). Her mom shook her head as she opened a drawer. Madeline saw that her parents’ phones were already in it. Madeline had to drop her_________in, too.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. That night after dinner, Madeline wandered into the kitchen, where her father was_________dishes.
“Still hungry?” he asked.
“No,” she answered. Then she gave him a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, “Couldn’t I have my phone back? Just so I can tell everyone what a(n)_________time I’m having?”
“Can’t,” he said. “It’s not here. Remember? Check out the bookcase in the living room,” he suggested. “Might find something you like.”
She walked into the living room and spotted a jigsaw puzzle (拼圖玩具) on the bookcase. She took it, put the pieces on the table, and began to work on them.
After what seemed like minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o’clock. She had been working for almost two hours! The puzzle was less than half done. It would have been nice to_________a picture of the puzzle with her friends, she thought.
The next morning, a golden sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Madeline of a photo that Brandi had shared. Her friends had oohed and ahhed (對……大加贊賞) over it. This view was even better. It would leave everyone_________. Madeline’s hand reached for the bedside table, but there was nothing there.
That evening, Madeline lost herself in the jigsaw puzzle again. She felt a little excited every time the shapes met. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was complete.
She stepped back to appreciate the finished puzzle. The picture showed an old painting of several farmhands working in a brown field and there was a giant rainbow arching across the sky.
Madeline enjoyed the puzzle for a few minutes, trying to keep the image in her mind. Then, she quietly started taking it apart. That, she thought, was just for me.

【題目】Hyperloop: the train of the future?
We’re going through the Nevada desert, north of Las Vegas, for having a look at what its supporters believe is the future of transport. This is Hyperloop - an attempt to send passengers rushing at 700 miles an hour through a vacuum tube.
Many think that’s impossible, but this project came back last year of virgin America Inc. with Sir Richard Branson becoming chari-man. In this 500-metre test track, they say they have shown that the technology works, though they’ve not yet put any human beings on board. The head of engineering, a space scientist from NASA, sees no reason why people might be frightened.
Anita Sengupta, Head of Engineering, Virgin Hyperloop One
“The Hyperloop is a maglev train in a vacuum system. And so you can also think of it as an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet high so people don’t have any problem flying in aeroplanes and people don’t have any problem going in maglev trains. This is simply joining the two and allows you to be more energy - saving.” The Virgin Hyperloop team have said they could take passengers from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes or cut the journey between. New York and Boston to under half an hour.
Did you know?
The word ‘maglev’ is a combination(結(jié)合)of the words ‘magnetic’ and ‘levitation’. This is because the system uses magnets to levitate(使浮起)the train. This reduces friction(摩擦力)-- the force that makes it difficult for things to move freely when they are touching each other -- and increases speed. The first maglev train operated in Hamburg, Germany in 1979.
