Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking, Although I’m a shy man, I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
Keep your speech simple. Your audience can’t take all of your main ideas, and they can only remember one or two of them, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to say, then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience won’t, either.
Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin, what main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(關(guān)鍵的): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
Keep your speech not long. The standard (標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的) length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反應(yīng)),the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech will fail.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.

People show their personalities in their clothes, their cars and their homes. Because we might choose some foods to “tell” people something about us, our diets can also be an expression of our personalities. For example, some people eat mainly gourmet (供美食家享用的)foods, such as caviar (魚子醬) and lobster (龍蝦), and they eat only in expensive restaurants. They know about the “better things in life”.
People can eat many different kinds of foods, but some people choose not to eat meat. Vegetarians(素食主義者) often have more in common(相同) than just their diets. Their personalities might be the same too. For example, vegetarians in the US and Canada may be creative(創(chuàng)造性的) people, and they might not enjoy competitive(競爭性的) sports or jobs. They worry about the health of the world, and they are probably strongly opposed (反對的) to wars(戰(zhàn)爭).
Some people eat mostly fast food. One study shows that many fast-food eaters have a lot in common with one another, but they are very different from vegetarians. They are competitive and good at business. They are also usually in a hurry. Many fast-food eaters might not agree with this description(描述) of their personalities, but it is a common picture of them.

As Danny put his lunch tray onto the cafeteria table, milk spilled all over his sandwich. He sat down, hung his head forward, looking at the food in front of him. Frowning, he began peeling the soggy milk-soaked bread (浸透牛奶的) from his sandwich. “This is the worst thing I’ve ever done!” he said, “It’s not that bad,” said his friend Elena, who was sitting across from him. “Just get another sandwich.”

“Sandwich? What sandwich? I am talking about the talent contest. It’s only two weeks away and I don’t know what I’m doing! Everybody will laugh at me. There’s no way to avoid it!”

“I stopped taking lessons in the third grade,” said Danny.

“Stop being so…” Elena paused, “That’s it, DRAMATIC!” Elena shouted excitedly. “You could do a dramatic reading. You definitely have the talent for it. Mrs. Pace always calls on you to read aloud in class. You could read a play aloud. Maybe you could even get extra credit from Mrs. Pace. In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence(自信) and without hesitation(猶豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. Finally, we must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.
There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory(記憶) is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists(一覽表) of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. We must "Learn through use". Practice is important. We must practice speaking and writing the language whenever(無論何時(shí)) we can.
