Having lived in California until 1970,my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however,to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude (震級(jí)) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0.There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So,my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter,I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963.Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the_famous_landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake,I quickly headed for the door to go outside.I remember I said a little prayer—something like,“Help me get out of here in time,Dear Heavenly Father”.Minutes later,I was safe outside.
1.The author writes the passage mainly to tell us about________.
A.a(chǎn) new film about an earthquake
B.how to survive an earthquake
C.his three earthquake experiences
D.how to save children in an earthquake
2.The earthquakes the author has experienced________.
A.a(chǎn)ll caused bodily harm B.a(chǎn)re all recorded in a website
C.a(chǎn)ll measured more than 6.0 D.a(chǎn)ll happened in California
3.When the first earthquake happened, the author________.
A.was staying with his daughter B.was planting fruit trees
C.held on to a tree for hours D.was in a hotel
4.What does the underlined part “the famous landmark” refer to?
A.A church.
B.Disneyland.
C.A building destroyed by an earthquake.
D.The place where the author was born.
5.Which of the following statements is NOT true about the third earthquake?
A.It happened in the author’s sixties.
B.the author succeeded in getting outside.
C.When it happened, the author was in a church.
D.The author was too afraid to walk when it happened.

An Englishman named PhilShaw invented extreme ironing in 1997 because he was bored doing ironing at home.
Extreme ironing is a special kind of outdoor sport. It combines (使結(jié)合) danger and excitement with practical ironing.
Who does extreme ironing? People all over the world who like danger do it. There are about l,000 people around the world who do extreme ironing. There are extreme ironing clubs and groups in Britain, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and the United States. You don't have to have any special qualifications (資格證明)to do it. In fact, anyone can do it. However, it is better to start ironing in your back yard before you start to iron on top of a mountain.
There are, of course, some rules in extreme ironing. The ironing must be outdoor. You must take an iron, an ironing board, and something that you actually iron to get the wrinkles out. Outdoors includes faraway and unusual places, such as on top of a mountain, while skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, or under water. There are no limits. The more unusual the better. However, you should plan carefully because weather conditions can suddenly change on mountains, for example. You should not do extreme ironing on your own.
What kind of things should you have? You must have a real iron. Travel irons are acceptable. You must not use plastic or toy irons. The clothes you iron must be at least the size of a hand towel. It shouldn't be just a handkerchief. The board doesn't have to be fullsize board, but that is preferred. It must be one metre long and thirty centimeters wide and have legs. You must also have proof of ironing that is either a photo or a video, and it should show a recognizable landmark. Be aware that people have already ironed near the top of Everest, the highest mountain in the world, and in the Blue Hole in Egypt, one of the most dangerous places to dive. However, there are still many records to break. Iron on!

55. What must you do in extreme ironing?
A. Iron outdoor. B. Iron in good weather.
C. Dive in the Blue Hole. D. Ski near a mountain.
56. How do extreme ironers feel when they do the sport?
