What time is it?There are many ways you can find out the time. You may have a watch on your wrist(手腕).You can look at a clock on the wall. You can listen to the radio, watch TV or ring a number on the telephone to get the time. But do you know the history of how people tell the time?
It has not always been easy to know the time.A long time ago people looked at the sun to tell the time. They could tell the time of the day by looking at the sun in the sky:morning, noon and afternoon.
Around the year 1400,people began to use the hourglass(沙漏).It was made of glass with some sand in it.It was wide at both ends, but narrow in the middle. The sand ran from one end to the other in one hour.At the end of every hour, people turned the glass over and began again.Hundreds of years later,a machine called clock was invented.
After that people made small clocks,so that they could carry them in their pockets. Then during World War Ⅰ,men started wearing their watches on their wrists. It was easier to tell the time. Now almost everyone wears a wrist watch.

Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor(輔導(dǎo)員). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil(惹人厭的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered “evil”? Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.
But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.
When the teacher came, ________. He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn’t think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn’t hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip’s behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.
I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.
As I was speaking to him, his_whole_body_came_to_rest_on_my_right_hand_next_to_his_heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I’m pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.
A child’s mind is clear and sensitive(敏感的). He receives whatever others say without protection. It is as easy to consider someone hopeless as it is to consider him able in his own special way.

On Sunday 23 April, more than 30, 000 people joined in the 2017 London Marathon, running 26.2 miles around the city center.
The London Marathon has taken place every year since 1981. At the first one, just 6, 225 people completed the course, and since then it has grown into one of the most important sporting events in the world. Each winner receives $500, 000 in prize money.
However, most marathon runners are not professional(專業(yè)的).They run to raise money for charities or just as a personal experience. Many people do fun things to make themselves stand out, like wear silly clothes or do things instead of just running.
For example, Tom Harrison took three days just to reach the halfway point, as he was crawling on his hands and knees dressed as a gorilla(猩猩), trying to raise money and attention for ‘The Gorilla Organization’.
One exciting part from this year’s race was the story of Jackie and her husband, who got married on the morning of the marathon. Then they both ran the race, with Jackie doing it in her wedding dress! They were running to raise money for cancer charities, as Jackie was diagnosed(診斷)with cancer three years ago.
Matthew Rees was another runner to inspire(激勵(lì))people, as he stopped just before the finish line to help another runner run the last 200m.They did not know each other before, but Matthew saw that David was too tired to finish the race and wanted to help him finish.
Every year there are lots of inspiring stories like this from the London Marathon, and it is a huge achievement even to run the 26.2 miles!
