Do you know there is a connection between music and language? You may not believe it. But recent studies give us the answer: Music can improve certain language abilities in the brain. Now, let's look at two examples.
Recently, researcher Kris has done a research which shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. In his study, he divided the people into two groups. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the other group had no musical training. He asked these people to listen to a person talking in a noisy room. As a result, the musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
You may wonder why. The answer is that musicians can hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists. When they play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others’ too. But they must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of nose.
A doctor at Harvard Medical School works with stroke(中風)patients. These people cannot say their name, addresses or other information normally because of their illness. However, they can still sing. He was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does this work? The doctor isn’t sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged(損壞的)parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
Music can improve concentration(注意力), memory, listening skills and overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable but also good for us in many other ways.
1.Musicians can hear better in a noisy room because they_________
A.can focus on certain sounds B.are cleverer than normal people
C.are trained to hear noises D.have a gift in this
2.The underlined word "sharp" probably means “_________"in the last paragraph.
A.quick to react B.having a thin edge
C.strong or forceful D.sudden and rapid
3.What is the passage mainly about'?
A.Music can improve our hearing abilities. B.The relationship between music and language.
C.Music can keep our brain clear. D.Singing words can help sick people.

Laura has an aunt who works in London. She loves Laura so much that she invites Laura to London every summer.
Last year Laura was happy to go to London and saw some famous places in London, including the British museum, National Gallery (畫廊) and other great buildings. How beautiful! She had to walk to his aunt’s house angrily.

She saw a man go close to her and put his hand in her pocket with a smile. Then he took out his hand quickly and left. She became very angry and shouted, “Stop it, or I will call the police!” To her surprise, she found her aunt and all the other people there laughing with the word “Congratulations!” In fact, the man was not a thief. Many young people tell me that they want to be writers. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there is a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and being famous, not the long hours alone at the typewriter.
When I became a writer, I had no future. What I had was a friend called George. He found me a home. It was cold and had no bathroom. I could only afford a used typewriter. A year later, however, I still hadn’t received a break and began to doubt myself. But I knew I wanted to write. I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with fear of failure. This is the shadow land ( 陰影) of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. Then one day I got a call from a friend who asked me to be an assistant for $6,000 a year. As the dollars were dancing in my head, something brought me to my sense. “Thanks, but no,” I heard myself saying. After that, I walked around my little room and started to feel like a fool. I felt a little low.
Later, I gradually began to sell my articles. It was after 17 years of being a writer that Roots was published. At once I had the kind of success that few writers ever experienced. The shadows had turned into great sunlight. Before that, it was a long and slow climb out of the shadows.
1.What does the author (作家) do to the people who want to be writers?
_____________________________________________________________________
2.Where must anyone with a dream learn to live?
_____________________________________________________________________
3.How much could the author get as an assistant for a year?
_____________________________________________________________________
4.How did the author feel after he refused the job offer?
_____________________________________________________________________
5.What can you learn from the article?(請自擬一句話作答)
_____________________________________________________________________
