World famous physicist(物理學(xué)家) Stephen Hawking died peacefully at his home in Cambridge on March 14th, 2018.

Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8th, 1942. He went to school in a small city near London. As he himself admitted, he wasn’t very serious about studying. He did very little work, he was never top of his class. However, he still achieved good marks. After leaving school, Hawking first went to Oxford University to study physics. Then he went to Cambridge University to study cosmology(宇宙學(xué)).

At the age of 21, Hawking noticed something wrong with him. He had a bad illness that stopped him from moving and talking. He couldn’t communicate except by blinking(眨眼). He sat on a wheelchair with a computer by his side. To communicate with others, he moved two fingers to control the computer’s mouse. He chose his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer(音響合成器). “I’ve had the disease for most of my life,” Hawking once said, “Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work.”

Although Hawking was a disabled man, he made great achievements. He received many awards and prizes for his work, including the Albert Einstein Award—the highest achievement in physics.

Hawking worked at Cambridge University as a professor. His story shows that nobody, however bad their situation is, should lose hope. "Life is not fair." he once said, "You just have to do the best you can in your own situation."

Today almost everyone has a smart phone booths are out of date and seem to be useless. But cities like Shanghai are trying to bring the old phone booths to life.

Shanghai will make changes to 263 phone booths in Xuhui District. The Library Booth is one of the six new kinds of booths, offering 60 booths for people to borrow and read. Another kind allows users to listen to audiobooks( 有聲書(shū))and even record their own voices.

Shanghai is not the only city trying to save the old phone booths. London cares about them even more, because the red booths have long been a special scene in London since the 1930s when they were painted all red. In recent years London has come up with many ideas to help phone booths stay useful. The UK company British Telecom has added screens and free WiFi to some booths. Users can use them to surf online and search for maps and weather reports. The company also allows people to rent()some booths to change them as they want to. Since 2009, more than 1,500 phone booths have been turned into flower shops, mini-cafes, art museums and even shower rooms.

In New York City, three phone booths in Time Square are turned into places for immigrant(移民) voices. When visitors pick up the phone, they can listen to oral(口述) histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. They can also open the books inside the booth to know more about the storytellers. Or they can share a part of their own stories if they wish.

Brazil made phone booths works of art. Sao Paulo paired 100 artists with 100 phone booths. Some artists painted on the booths, others made them sculptures- one was shaped like a brain and another wore a pair of shoes.

Phone booths are finding creative ways to live on. Will they succeed? Only time will tell.

Teaching material discussion group (15)

Hi! I 'm doing a survey on teaching materials in school. What kind of textbooks do you use? Do you think the use of photocopied(復(fù)印的) textbooks and newspaper articles in the classroom can be accepted? Please give your_______.

The use of such materials is certainly not _______ for writers. Textbooks are like other creative works. Many people have to put their efforts in the writing of a book. The efforts of the writers and publishers will be totally wasted if everyone photocopies their textbooks. I can’t imagine that!

I don’t think it right to use photocopied materials even in the classroom because it's against the law. Teachers should set a good example for their students by _________ the law.

Copied books are as good as copyrighted(正版的) ones, but they don't _______much, usually less than half the price. In addition, it is so _______ to use copied materials. When we want to share something good we just have it photocopied. I think photocopying is OK because publishers are still making a lot of money anyway.

Most of the time, teachers make sure their students do not use photocopied materials. But I know some teachers do use photocopied newspaper articles sometimes, as their students are eager to learn more to widen their views. As you know, teachers always put the _________ of students above anything else. After all, you can't expect all the students to buy newspapers

Wow! Thank you for sharing so many ideas!
