I am Turere. I come from Kitengela, a farming community on the edge (邊緣) of Nairobi National Park of Kenya (肯尼亞). Since the age of nine, I have helped to look after my family’s cows. As a child, in my free time, I enjoyed playing with electronics. I made my own inventions, such as electronics toys from car parts and other things. I also built other electronic devices (儀器) for my neighbors.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. It also changed the lives of many people in my community. One night, a lion from the park came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. However, killing the lion, I thought, was not the best way to solve the problem. Instead, I decided to invent a solution.
The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought lions were scared of fire. But I came to realize that didn't really help, because it was even helping the lions to see through the cowshed (牛棚). So I didn't give up. I continued.
And a second idea I got was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lions into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But lions are very clever. They will come the first day and they see the scarecrow, and they go back. But the second day, they'll come and they say, this thing is not moving here, it is always here! So he jumps in and kills the animal.
So one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a torch (手電筒), and that day the lions didn’t come. And I discovered that lions were afraid of a moving light. So I had an idea ...

Choose the best answer(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最恰當(dāng)?shù)拇鸢?:
For years I wanted a flower garden. I’d spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.
But then we had Matthew, and Marvin, and the twins, Alisa, and Alan, and then Helen. Five children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight(拮據(jù)的), as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I’d have to say, “Do you see a money tree in the yard? Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.
Then, one spring morning, on Mother’s Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow(垂柳), because I saw things blowing around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on — and I couldn’t believe what I saw.
There was a money tree in my yard!
I went to have a look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note among them, “Thank you for your time, Mom. We love you.”
Later, my children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.
That was three years ago. My garden’s now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and take care of my flowers, I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they’re right there with me.
I live in a city where winters are long and cold, and summers are too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out of my window and think of the flowers, I’ll see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes — every time.
I’m still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

Charles Dickens was born in 1812. His father was a clerk and wasn’t paid much, so the family lived in an old, poor house. Then Mr. Dickens lost his job and went deep into debt(債).
One day, the police showed up and asked Mr. Dickens if he could pay his debts. When Mr. Dickens said he didn’t have enough money, one policeman answered that he had to go to debtor’s prison.
With no one to support them, Mrs. Dickens and the children, except Charles, moved into prison with their father. Even though Charles was only 12 years old, he got a job in a dirty, black shoe polish factory working 12 hour days.
When Mr. Dickens received some money from a relative, he paid his debts and got out of prison. He then got a job as a court reporter.
Charles went back to school. Charles studied hard and learned quickly. He also studied people, paying attention to what they did and why they did it.
After two years, he got a job as a reporter at England’s Houses of Parliament and he found it attractive.
Then one day Dickens decided to be imaginative, and he wrote a story of his own. Every character seemed to be a little like someone he had known. Finally one evening he dropped off his story, under the penname Boz, at The Monthly Magazine office.
A month later Dickens was shouting joyfully, “They printed my story! I’m an author!”
The magazine wanted more and more stories by Boz. Soon Dickens was writing stories about children working in factories, families living in debtor’s prison and poor people being hungry. He made the stories fun to read in high hopes that people would do something about the things that were wrong.
