"Here's the advance payment(預(yù)期款) of 10,000 dollars. You will get the other half when we get those papers," the agent told Mike. "But sir, Mr. Smith has been very suspicious (懷疑) since last week," Mike replied.

"Is that true?" Alim said." We’ll see what Mr. Smith says."
Alim called Mr. Smith and told him to come right away. Mr. Smith looked at Mike and said. "So you are the thief! I believed in you, Mike."

He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got from the dock at his family's cabin on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch(鱸魚)with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(魚餌)and practiced casting. The lure struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset, then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.
When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. Finally, he very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a perch . The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish. Then the father lit a match(火柴) and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.--- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.
"You'll have to put it back, son," he said.
"Dad!" cried the boy.
"There will be other fish," said his father.
"Not as big as this one," cried the boy.
He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could know everything by his father's clear voice that the decision could not be changed. He slowly worked the hook(鉤) out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The boy suspected that he would never again see such a great fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His father's cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.
He was right. He has never again caught such a magnificent fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see that same fish---again and again---every time he comes up against a question of ethics(道德規(guī)范).
【小題1】When did the story happen?

【小題3】When does the architect (the father’s son) think of that perch put back?
A.When he takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.
B.When he builds many famous buildings.
C.When he pays a visit to his old father.
D.When he faces some problems about ethics.
【小題4】Which word can not be used to describe the boy’s father?
A.honest B.unselfish C.serious D.generous
【小題5】From the passage, we can learn _________.
A.how we can get the handsome fish
B.how we master some skills of going fishing
C.how we understand our parents’ words is very important

All students need to have good habits(好習(xí)慣):When you have good study habits, you learn things quickly. You also remember them easily.
Do you like to study in the living room? This is not a good place because it is usually too noisy. The telephone bell rings there; the TV is there, and sometimes it is a good place for your pet dog or cats to play and rest. You need to study in a quiet place, like your bedroom. A quiet place will help you only think about one thing, and you will learn better.
Before you begin to study, do not forget to clean your desk. A good desk light is important, too. You’ll feel tired easily if there is not enough light(光線). So you should have a clean and bright lamp. To tell you the truth, the most important is that you should put your heart into your study.

Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘錄) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through pop music or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem rather important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures (the opposite of success). JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投籃) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to tell when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re struggling(奮斗), even when you’re discouraged (泄氣), and you feel other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
【小題1】Why does Barack Obama mention (提到) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the third paragraph?

A.To compare these two famous persons.
B.To explain that the more failures he has, the more successful he is.
C.If you want to be successful, you should fail first.
D.To show that failure is the mother of success.
【小題2】 Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.No one can be successful without working hard.
B.Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.
C.Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.
D.One should try his best to make his dream come true.
【小題3】Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined sentence?
A.One shouldn’t ask questions because it is a sign of strength.
B.One should believe in himself though he will face much difficulty.
C.One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.
D.One doesn’t have to ask for help because it is a sign of weakness.

American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” however, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary(詞匯)for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”.
There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, when Americans ask a question., they say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often say “Have you a storybook?”
All these differences can be confusing (易混淆的)if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.

Good writing starts with good ideas. If you write about things that you care about, you will write better. If you write about things that you don’t care about, you’ll be bored and your paper will not have many good ideas.
Once you have a good idea, the next step is organization. Think through your paper before you start. Write an outline. You need to know what your main points are before you start your first paragraph (段落). Use 2-4 main points, one paragraph each.
In your central paragraphs, be concise (簡短的) and specific (具體的). Give examples with details(細(xì)節(jié)), not just general ideas. If you can say the same thing with fewer words, do it! Don’t use big words.
When you finish writing, look at your outline again. Did you really follow it or did it change as you wrote? Many times you find different ideas as you write. Look at your central paragraphs. What are their main ideas now? Are these ideas in the introduction? I often write the introduction again to fit the paper after I finish writing.
