Since 1850.the temperature of Earth's surface has increased about 0.6℃.Scientists predict it may warm much more by the end of this century.Who's turning up the heat? Well, it seems that we are! Some of this global warming may be natural. However, nearly all scientists now agree that most of it is due to peoples actions.Over the past 150 years, we've added huge amounts of certain gases, especially carbon dioxide(CO2)to the air. These gases can keep heat near Earth's surface,so more carbon dioxide means more heat is kept near Earth's surface.Global warming may change the weather in ways that lead to more severe storms, floods and droughts.

We add carbon dioxide to the air when we burn things, especially fossil fuels.Fossil fuels are energy sources formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.Coal, oil, and natural gas are all fossil fuels.People in the United States and other countries started bunting large amounts of fossil fuels more than a century ago.The amount d fossil fuels being burned each year has been increasing worldwide. The more we burn,________.

What can we do to help? Nowadays to live a low-carbon life is quite popular in the world.Low-carbon means to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide.Saving energy and reusing are the key words. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make our lives low-carbon.

A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo despite(盡管)the fact that he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo teacher. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

“Master,” the boy finally said, “shouldn't I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know,” the teacher replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition.

Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent(對手)became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match.Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. The match started, and the boy soon appeared to be overmatched.Thought that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out.He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared.

“No,” the teacher insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match continued, his opponent made a careless mistake.Immediately, the boy used his move to pin(壓住)him. The boy won the match and the competition. He was the winner.

On the way home, the boy and the teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy got up the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

“Teacher, how did I win the competition with only one move?”

The teacher answered.“First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo.Second, the only known defense(防衛(wèi))for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm.”

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容完成下面的表格,每空一詞。

For a long time, scientists didn’t study animal thinking. Most of them did not believe that animals could think. They thought humans were the only thinking animals.

Now more scientists are studying this subject. But it’s very hard to prove things that no one can see or measure. So some scientists decided to take a look at brains.

Is bigger better? No.Cow brains are bigger than dog brains, but that doesn’t make cows smarter than dogs. And squirrels have some of the biggest brains of all for their body size. But squirrels aren’t even close to being the smartest animals in the world. So the size of a brain may give some clues(線索)about brain power, but it doesn’t prove anything.

Other scientists study thinking by ________ how animals solve problems. They watch animals in the wild or do thinking tests in a lab.

For example, the scientist might put some food just out of an animal’s reach. One kind of animal may grab a stick and use it to slide the food over.Another kind might not be able to figure out a way to get the food. Some scientists think animals that have lots of problems to solve must be smarter than animals with simple lives.Scientists also study certain kinds of behaviour for clues about thinking. They watch for three things:whether animals use tools, how they act with each other, and how they communicate.

1.“This subject” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

2.The underlined word “smarter” means ________ in English.(限填一詞)

3.What have scientists learned from studying the size of animals’ brains?

4.Complete the sentence with just one word:Other scientists study thinking by ________ how animals solve problems.(限填一詞)

5.Scientists study such animals’ behavior as whether animals use tools, how they act with each other and ________ as well.
