Country music is a kind of American popular music. It first came from the countryside of the Southern United States as early as the 1920s. It joins American folk (民間的) music to Western music. Blues,a kind of music full of deep unhappiness, has also been widely used in it since its recorded history. Singers were usually singing while they themselves were performing the instruments (樂器) ,such as guitars, banjos and drums. Nashville in Tennessee was once the home of American country music. It became popular in the 1940s.
In the 1950s,country music was mainly about love 一getting or losing a boyfriend or girlfriend, and money was also thought to be another important thing.
Then in the 1960s,song writers turned to other subjects. During these years many young students were angry with the society (社會) ,so songs were often full of angry feelings. Political leaders (政治領(lǐng)導人) were not well thought of and those songs often made fun of them.
During the 1990s,country music became more and more popular. Song writers no longer wrote about the modern U.S.A — money, success or expensive things to buy. Instead, they were writing once more about things that were common for everyonef feeling alone in the modern world, missing good old days, the importance of having good friends and so on.
In 2009 in the United States,a record showed that country music was the most listened to when people were driving on their way home in the evening, and second most popular on their way to work in the morning.
Today country music has become a big money tree. It brings in between 200 and 400 million dollars a year for the people and the country. The music has reached all parts of the States, from Los Angeles in the west to New York in the east. Singers do not just come from the States but from all over the world. There are many famous singers from Britain,Canada and Australia. A lot of them appear on television too.
