Growing up on her own

WORLD No 2 tennis player Jelena Jankovic from Serbia (塞爾維亞) has won her second title of the year. She became champion of the China Open on September 28.
Jankovic first practiced tennis when she was nine years old. After six months Jankovic played her first match.
It was the national championship for kids up to 10 years old. She came to the semi-finals (半決賽).
When she was 11, she won a national championship for girls up to 12 years old. In order to continue her career, Jelena left Serbia and went to the United States.
At that time, she didn’t speak any English. And her family did not come with her. It was a hard time.
“I did not know what I needed to do when I was going to school. I could not do my homework. When you have a difficulty, there is nobody to help you. So, you learn it the hard way,” Jelena said.
However, it was a good learning experience for Jelena. “It makes me more independent (獨(dú)立的) and stronger as a person. I know how to do everything by myself so I don’t have to depend on (依賴(lài)) my parents or somebody else to do it for me,” she said.
In the US, Jelena received better conditions for practice and development of her game. In 2000, she became a professional (職業(yè)選手) and has been shining on the tennis court ever since.

When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’ d sit on the edge of the dock(碼頭), feet dangling(搖晃), and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.
An important new study into teenage attitudes (態(tài)度) surprisingly shows that their family life is happier than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive (積極的) today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious(叛逆的)and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”
So it seems that these parents are much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel LaSalle. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. When they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Cromer, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call talk or discussion. For example, when I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”
Maybe this positive view of family life should not be unexpected. It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion(叛逆)is not based on real facts. A researcher explains, “Teenagers were thought to be different from others in a part of time in our social history. But to our surprise, they say they are getting on well with their parents. But that idea of rebelling and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled.”
【小題1】The study shows that teenagers don’t want to ______________________.

A.share family dutiesB.cause trouble in their families
C.go boating with their familyD.make family decisions
【小題2】Compared with parents of 30 years ago, today’s parents ___________________.
A.go to clubs more often with their childrenB.a(chǎn)re much stricter with their children
C.care less about their children’s lifeD.give their children more freedom
【小題3】According to the writer, teenage rebellion ____________________.
A.may be a wrong opinionB.is common at present
C.lived only in the 1960sD.was caused by changes in families
【小題4】Which title best gives the main idea of the passage?
A.Discussion in family.B.Teenage education in family.
C.Harmony in family.D.Teenage trouble in family.
