“Mum, I want to make you a bet,” I said. “If I go a whole year without TV, will you give me a hundred dollars?”
“Well, if you can 1 do it, …”
“Of course I can,” I replied, trying to convince 2 .
In fact, all this started from my 3 of a picture in the newspaper. I couldn’t bear to look at that boy. He said that he had 4 one year without TV for a hundred dollars, 5 me with mocking eyes. It seemed he was saying, “I did it, 6 you can’t!”. I glared at the boy’s face.
That year I did a lot of things. For example, my father taught me to 7 , which became my favorite sport. 8 winter afternoons snowball wars with my neighbors offered daily drama. I went on bike trips with my friends and swam as much as a fish.
It was unbelievable how much 9 I had without TV. I learned so many new games. I guess the 10 thing I learnt, though, was self-motivation(上進(jìn)心).
I started to do my homework. I went from a D student to an A student within a couple of 11 .
I used to 12 reading if there were no 13 , but now I began to read and enjoy it. I could arrange off all the pictures just the way I wanted them—my own little TV, right 14 my head!
I’m surprised what I did. I got a lot more from the 15 than just the 100 dollars!

On my eighth birthday, Dad bought me an accordion(手風(fēng)琴) and said excitedly, "Once you learn to play, it'll stay with you for life." But I didn't want to play it. I just wanted to play games, But Dad asked me to take accordion lessons.
One day, I found a box in a corner. When I opened it, I saw a beautiful violin. "It was your father's," Mum said. "His parents bought it for him. I guess he got too busy on the farm to learn to play it."
I had to practice half an hour every day, and every day I tried to get out of it. But Dad didn't allow. I asked why. He answered, "Because you can bring people joy. You can touch their hearts." He added softly, "Someday you'll have the chance I never had: you'll play beautiful music for your family. And you'll understand why you've worked so hard." I was speechless.
The lessons stopped after I finished high school. When I grew up, I got married and moved into a new house. I put the accordion in the attic(閣樓).
One afternoon, my two children found the accordion by accident (偶然). They got very excited. "Play it. Play it," they laughed and said. I started to play some simple songs. I was surprised I could still remember them. Soon the kids were dancing. Even my wife was laughing and clapping to the beat.
At that moment, my father's words came back to me, "Someday you'll have the chance I never had. And you'll understand." I finally knew why Dad had asked me to practice hard. Dad never learnt to play his violin. But I told my family, "This is my father's music."

I stood there listening to my father shout at the top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had done something wrong. "Which one of you did this?" We all looked down at the step. There was child's 1 in chalk there. I was very 2 . I hoped no one could see it. Would he 3 it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me, I lied, "Not me, Dad." The others denied (否認(rèn)) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us 4 have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn't find the courage (勇氣) to tell the 5 . To 6 out who had written on the step, Father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. "I want each of you to write exactly 7 you see on the step." I tried my best to write the words 8 . I didn't want dad to be able to tell it was me. He gathered up our pieces of paper and looked at them, "Since 9 of you will admit (承認(rèn)) to have done it, then I will punish you all." I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I 10 was for Dad to punish me! "I did it." My sister stepped forward and said she had done something she hadn' t. She was grounded (受 處罰) for a month. We didn't talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older and I knew it was 11 to finally tell my dad it was really me. I always felt 12 because of it. That was the last time I let anyone take the blame for me. | ||||
