Many years ago, I had my first chance to visit Russia. "Russians are a very polite people," I had been told before my arrival. One of my friends explained that a gentleman will pour the lemonade for the ladies and show other good manners.
Toward the end of my three-week trip, I was invited by my Russian friend Nicolai Vasilevich and his wife Yulya out to dinner. At the end of a wonderful meal, Yulya asked if I would like a banana. I politely declined(婉謝) and thanked her, and explained I was most satisfied with the meal. But my mind was racing: "What should I do? Should I offer her a banana though they are as close to her as they are to me? What is the polite thing to do?"
"Would you like a banana?" I asked Yulya.
"Yes," she smiled, but didn't try to take any of the three bananas in the fruit basket.
"Which one would you like?" I asked again.
"That one," she pointed at one of the bananas. So thinking about Russian politeness, f picked the banana Yulya had pointed at. Then I peeled it half way and handed it to her.Smiles on Yulya's and Nicolai's faces told me I had done the right thing. Alter this experience, I spent much time letting the world know that in Russia, the polite thing was to peel bananas for ladies.
However, sometime during my third trip i learned I was wrong.
"Oh no, David," a Russian politely corrected me.  "In Russia, when a man peels a banana for a lady, it means he has a romantic interest in her." How embarrassed (尷尬) I felt.
So to communicate properly with people of different cultures, we should watch carefully how people of the same culture communicate with each other. Besides, don’t be afraid to ask questions about their culture.

Head teacher, teachers, grandparents, parents and classmates, I’m very proud that I have been chosen to speak to you all today. I’m a bit nervous as I’ve never made a speech before to so many people, so please forgive me if it shows!
As we all know, this is the school leavers’ party, and it’s time to say goodbye to everyone. We’re sorry to leave you at the end of our junior high school education, and we promise that we'll never forget the happy times we have spent in these buildings with you all.
I’d like to thank three groups of people for the three things I’ve learnt while I’ve been a pupil at our school. The three things are friendship, love and knowledge.
The first group is my friends, and what I’ve learnt is the importance of friendship. We’ve worked hard together, we’ve even shared some difficult times together, but we’ve also had a lot of fun. Many of us will go to new schools and we may not see each other so often in the future. Others will go on to senior high school and continue their close friendships. But friends don’t have to see each other all the time. Sometimes the friends you treasure most are the friends you see less often. A life without old friends is like a day without sunshine. We'll always stay in touch.
The second group is our parents and grandparents. We thank you for the love you have shown us during our years at junior high school, for making a home where we feel both safe and relaxed, and where we can prepare ourselves for our school days. We also thank you for your help with our homework. How many of us owe our good grades to the suggestions you have made during those long evenings?
And finally, the third group is our teachers. We can never pay you back for your kindness, your patience, and gift of knowledge which you have offered us; sometimes you’ve made us work very hard. But you have always been fair and you’ll always be our role models. There’s a saying from Ireland which is a favourite of mine: Strangers are only friends you haven’t met yet.
I couldn’t say it better myself. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all and wish you success for the future.
小題1:Who was the speech made by?

小題3:Which words can you use to describe the tone?
A.troubledB.worriedC.excitedD.humorous

This summer I will leave the junior high school where I have been for three years. I am generally considered to be a careful and polite boy now. However, five years ago, I was a little bit bossy(專橫的). I often fought with other boys and sometimes I even fought with my elder sister. When I saw Superman on TV for the first time, I dreamed of being a superman one day.
One P.E. class, I called up all of my friends to get together in our classroom. “Can anybody jump out of the window?” I asked them. After hearing this, all my friends kept silent. “I know you are all chickens,” I said. “Can you?” one of my friends asked me. “Sure!” I answered. “If I do it, I will get all the toys that you have. If I fail, you will get all of my toys, OK?” They said, “OK!”
Then I went up to the window of the second floor. I took a deep breath and then jumped down, stretching out my arms just like Superman. Then I hit the ground.
When I opened my eyes, I found myself lying in the hospital. I was taken to the hospital because my arms were badly hurt. Later, I heard that my P.E. teacher nearly lost his job for this, but I never received the serious punishment I feared.

Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays”?“Survival Holidays” is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities. Now about 1,100 companies are allowed (允許) to take children into the great outdoors without their parents.
The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival Holidays” gives them an important change.
Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled by adults, which causes many problems. They don't know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even slight danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times.
