My class will put on a short play in English at the end of the year. Yesterday our English teacher gave us copies of the play.

"Choose a character in the play whom you'd like to be," she told us. "This afternoon learn a few lines of this part for homework. Then tomorrow you can say those lines in front of the class. I'll decide who play each part."

I wanted to have one of the bigger parts in the play, so I choose the part of the king . He has a lot of lines to say. I learned them by heart.

This morning in our English lesson we had to say our lines. I acted the part of the king. When I said my lines, I put a lot of expression into my acting. I thought I acted really well.

Everyone in the class read a part and then the teacher would decide who would play each part .

Many of the students in my class couldn't act at all. They couldn't even read without making lots of mistakes. I was sure that I would get a big part in the play.

However, the teacher gave me the part of a soldier. He has only one line. It is ,"Yes, sir!"

I was very disappointed. At the end of the lesson I went up to her and asked her why I had such a small part.

"You put too much expression in your acting," she said. "Good acting is not big acting . It is acting the audience can believe in.”

I think I know what she means.

1.What did the boy want to do in the play?

A. To get a small acting part. B. To organize the play.

C. To get a large acting part. D. To work the lights.

2.How did the boy feel when the teacher told the class they would put on a play?

A. Bored B. Sad C. Excited D. Unhappy

3.Why didn’t the teacher give him the part of the king ?

A. He did not act correctly.

B. He did not know the lines.

C. He was not handsome.

D. He was too short.

4.What does the underlined word "expression " in the passage mean?

A. 表情 B. 建議 C. 模仿 D. 服飾

Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. In the book, "Shangri-La" is a mysterious, harmonious valley, where three rivers joined together, mountains, the tops of which were covered by snow, reached to the sky and fields of long grass covered the earth. In this perfect world lived people who could live without getting old. In the Tibetan language, Shangri-la means the sun and the moon in one’s heart. Today, it has become a word which is used in our everyday life, meaning heaven on the earth.

Several places in the Buddhist Himalaya between northern India and Tibet have claimed to be the basis for Hilton's legend, largely to attract tourism. In China, Tao Qian of the Jin Dynasty described a Shangri-La in his work Story of the Peach Blossom Valley (桃花源記). In modern China, the Zhongdian country was renamed to 香格里拉縣in 2001, to attract tourists. The legendary Kun Lun Mountains in Tibet offer other possible Shangri-La valleys.

Today, millions of tourists visit Shangri-la. The beautiful scenery there will make it hard for any viewer to describe in words. Three mountains, which are covered with snow, tower over the land. Lakes, surrounded by vast grasslands, look like jewels. Sheep, cows and horses feed freely on the green grass and the forests around are home to lots of birds and animals. In this heavenly world, people live peacefully with nature and are nearly separated from the outside world.

The weather in Shangri-la is so changeable (易變的)that the tourists can feel they have four seasons in one day. The best times to visit Shangri-la are spring and autumn because the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug (擁抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.

2.What impressed the writer most during his train trip?

A. The people on the train were the villagers’ favorite relatives.

B. The writer spent the whole journey reading magazines.

C. The writer thought he enjoyed the train journey at last.

D. The writer’s uncle gave him a warm hug with a huge smile.

4.What’s the best title of the passage?
