Maybe you are a common student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how.
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a plan of your time. Don’t forget to spare enough time for entertainment. A weekly plan may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, focus on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude(態(tài)度)about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be too worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A TV program has become popular in China recently. It has made people all over China become interested in writing Chinese characters(漢字).
The increasing use of computers and smart phones has left most young people hardly able to write by hand. Many of them are even unable to remember the 10,000 characters used in daily life without electronic help.
CCTV started the Chinese Character Dictation Competition to improve the population’s handwriting skills. Contestants(參與者)on the show were school pupils, but it was found that 70 % of adults in the audience(觀眾)were unable to remember how to write the word “chan chu”.
Because computers allow people to type characters simply by entering pinyin, they don’t
need to remember how to write them. “The keyboard age has had a big influence on the handwriting of Chinese characters.”Guan Zhengwen, who designed and directed the show said.
He added that he hoped to encourage people to keep it alive as an art form.
Hao Mingjian, an editor of a magazine, putting his heart into Chinese characters, said,“Learning Chinese characters goes on throughout your life. If you stop using them for a long time, it is very likely that you will forget them.”
Answer the questions according to the passage.

2. What has left most young people hardly able to write by hand?
3. Why did CCTV start the Chinese Character Dictation Competition?
4. How do computers allow people to type characters simply?

My mother loves flowers. We live next door to each other, so she often spends much time planting flowers in my garden. In summer, she often makes colourful bouquets(花束) and puts them inside the houses---both hers and mine.
One year, shortly before Christmas, a local flower shop offered an activity for mothers in each month of the next year. It seemed to be a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years. I couldn’t wait the new year so that I could give a bouquet to her!
After the Christmas, in early January. I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month’s bouquet. The small bouquet would hardly fill a small vase. I was so embarrassed. “Mum, I’m sorry,” I told her. “I didn’t know how skimpy that bouquet was.” She looked at me and smiled. “It’s okay,” she said. “It allows me to enjoy the beauty of each one better.”
I was amazed at what she said. It helped me realized something more important---we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each thing when we have too many good things.
