【題目】 When thinking of ways to relax in life, usually things like yoga, jogging and music come to mind. These are great, to be sure. But getting a friend can also have many benefits. While human friends provide great social support, furry friends like cats and dogs can come with some great benefits.

Pets can improve people's mood. For those who love animals, it's actually impossible to stay in a bad mood when a pair of loving puppy eyes meets yours, or when a super-soft cat rubs up against your hand. The study found that people with AIDS were less likely to suffer from deep sadness if they owned a pet.

Pets also encourage people to get out and exercise. Whether people walk their dogs because they need it, or are more likely to enjoy a walk when they have companionship, dog owners do spend more time walking than non-pet owners.

While we all know the power of talking about your problems with a good friend who is a good listener, research shows that spending time with pets may be even better! People actually experience less stress(壓力) when their pets are with them than when a supportive friend is present! A recent study performed by Washington State University(WSU) has proved that petting cats and dogs for just ten minutes is an effective way to reduce stress levels. The team chose 249 students and put them into four groups. The first group was provided 10 minutes to play with dogs and cats.

The second group waited in line while observing the first group. The third group watched a video of the same animals, while the fourth group was just waiting. "What we wanted to learn was whether this exposure(接觸) would help students reduce their stress, and it did, "said Patricia Pendry, a professor in WSU.

It's important to realize that owning a pet isn't for everyone. It does come with additional work and responsibility, which can bring its own stress. However, for most people, the advantages of having a pet outweigh the drawbacks(缺點(diǎn)). Having a furry best friend can reduce stress in your life and bring you support when times get tough.

【題目】 Have you ever tried 3-D printing? A team of seven students from No. 34 Middle School in Zhengzhou, Henan, have won awards for their creative 3-D printing works.

Two of the team's works took home the top prize at the International Youth Innovation Design Competition. It was held in France this summer. One of their works had the theme "China's New Era (時(shí)代) ". The other work was an ancient Chinese palace. They sent the work as a gift to local officials in Lille, France.

The team members learned how to print in their school's 3-D printing club. They took classes twice a week to learn 3-D printing. To make 3-D printed items, they first draw a blueprint (藍(lán)圖) . Then, they use a computer to design models of the pieces they need. After that, they use a 3-D printer to print the pieces and assemble (組裝) them, as Liu Songyuan, 14, said.

But knowing how to use the tools is just one part of mastering 3-D printing. One also has to have imagination. To show the theme "China's New Era", they printed out items standing for high-speed trains, bike sharing, cashless payment and online shopping. They placed these items around a dragon, which represented China. They made this work within just three hours, winning a national 3-D printing competition in China and later the international competition.

When they got to the international competition, they wanted to present something that stood for traditional Chinese culture. They were inspired (啟迪) by a trip to the palace Museum. "When we saw the buildings there, we thought 'That's it!" said Zhang Jiuxing, 14. They took photos of the buildings and did a lot of research to make their 3-D-printed works more realistic (逼真的) . 【題目】 An idiom is a phrase that we can’t understand from the meaning of each word. For example, if an American boy asks his mom what’s for dinner tomorrow, she may say “I’ll play it by ear”, that means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later.

“Play it by ear” used to mean playing music without using the sheet music(樂(lè)譜), but now people often use it when they’re not talking about music!

There are many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be much more vivid(生動(dòng)的)and colourful.

Have you ever heard the idiom “He bought the farm”? It means he died. Do you know how it became popular? It was first used during World War I. When a soldier died, the government gave his family enough money to buy a farm.

In the early 1930s, people in the U.S. often did not know when or where their next meal was coming from. So as soon as they got something in their hand that could be eaten, it would go into their mouth. That was how people began to use the idiom “l(fā)iving hand to mouth” to mean “l(fā)iving a poor life”.

And don’t be angry if your English friend says this to you, “Break a leg in your game!" In fact, he is wishing you good luck! Hundreds of years ago, people believed in sprites. Sprites enjoyed causing trouble. If the sprites heard you ask for something, they would make the opposite take place. Tell someone to “break a leg” and the sprites would make something good take place.

Aren’t English idioms interesting? And break a leg in your next football match!

1The idiom “play it by ear” means“________”

A.have no plans for dinner today.B.have no plans for dinner tomorrow.

2If someone is very poor, we can say he_________.

A.buys the farm.B.lives hand to mouth.

C.breaks a leg.D.plays it by ear

3We can infer(推斷)that in the early 1930s common American people________

A.loved buying farms.B.lived a hard life.

C.had meals at different places and times.D.liked eating from their hands.

4British people used to believe the sprites liked to________

A.make something good take place.B.break a leg.

C.make trouble.D.make bad things take place

5If your friend is having a basketball match, you can say all of the following excpt “_______”.

A.Bad luckB.Good luckC.Have funD.Enjoy the game
