What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody mentions hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.
If you arrange(排列) the 26 English letters in order and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c…26 for z, you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98, meaning 98 is its mark. Knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5=96, love:12+15+22+5=54, and luck: 12+21+3+11=47, a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark. What about money? It can’t , either.
Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude.Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude:1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100,a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most time people hope for a better life. It is possible that they will have a better life if they chang their attitudes. When you change your manner and became friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure, you’ll find it’s also rewarding(有益的)though it has caused you losses(損失).

Multitasking (多任務處理)
Being able to multitasking ---doing several things at the same time ---- is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.
What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle a larger number of electronic devices (電子產品) as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPads. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.
Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.
Multitasking also has an effect on young people’s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the efforts of modern gadgets (器具) on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive(肯定的) response (回應). However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers (雇主) feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.

Gary was a policeman. He liked boiled eggs. He often had one for breakfast. One morning in December, he was on duty on the road in his police car. When the waiter brought them to him, he found that the egg was not cooked enough. He decided to cook his egg a little longer. He put the egg inside the microwave oven and turned the switch on. He let the egg cook for one minute. Then he took it out and went back to his table. He picked up his spoon and pushed it into the egg.
Suddenly there was a loud explosion(爆炸聲). For a moment, all the other people rushed to hide under the tables in the café as they thought someone had thrown a bomb(炸彈)into the building. Do animals have a culture? What do we mean by “culture?” Lately social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have culture too. When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life a group of people have in common. Culture includes the beliefs and attitudes we learn. It is the patterns( 樣式 ) of behavior that help people to live together. It is also the patterns of behavior that make one group of people different from another group.
Our culture lets us make up for having lost our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses. Instead we use tools, cooperate with one another, and communicate ( 交流 ) with language. But these aspects of human behavior, or “culture,” can also be found in the lives of certain animals. Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees( 黑猩猩 ) can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to know that the line dividing(區(qū)分 ) us from animals is not as clear as we used to think.
1.When we talk about “culture”, we mean________.
A. book language of behavior we learn B. the patterns of behavior we learn
C. traditional ideas D. people’s habits
2.We thought ____________ was the biggest difference between human beings and other animals.
A. cooperating with one another B. communicating with language
C. using tools D. losing long teeth
3.It’s ___________ that animals have a culture too.
A. sure B. unbelievable C. possible D. important
4. The main idea of the passage is ___________.
A. chimpanzees can learn to use sign language to make sentences
B. other animals can invent tools.
C. knowledge and communication are no longer signs
D. the line dividing human culture from animal culture is not as clear as we might think
