Norman Cousins was a businessman from the United Stated who often traveled around the world on business. He enjoyed his work and traveling. But now, Mr. Cousins got sick, because he had pushed his body to the limit of its strength on his work. Surrounded by endless work, he had no choice but to deal with it day and night. Then a chemical change began to take place inside him. The material between his bones became weak. In less than one week after his return, he could not stand. Every move that he make was painful. He was not able to sleep at night.

The doctors told him that they did not know how to cure (治療) Mr. Cousins’ problem and he might never get over the illness. However, Mr. Cousins refused to give up hope. He thought that unhappy thoughts were causing bad chemical changes in his body. He didn’t want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness.

He began to experiment (實(shí)驗(yàn)) on himself while still in the hospital by watching funny shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that 10 minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain-free sleep at night. After that Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching funny shows on television, reading funny books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to take a vacation to Puerto Rico where he began running on the beach for exercise.

After a few months, Mr. Cousins returned to work. He had laughed himself back to health.

In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times without success. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English... Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top from yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “l(fā)ive with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win them all.”

1.The “spider story” mentioned in the passage is used to show that _________.

A. only failure can lead you to success

B. we can make it if we keep trying

C. failure is always terrible

D. people who fail have the same experience

2.The underlined phrase “bear in mind” in the last paragraph means _________.

A. take care B. forget C. recognize D. remember

3.The writer tells us to do all the things when dealing with failure except ________.

A. thinking about how it happened

B. believing that we can’t live happily if we fail

C. considering failure as a part of life

D. checking out whether our goals are right for the present situation

4.The main idea of this passage is _________.

A. what the value of failure is

B. that Edison and Bruce failed repeatedly before success

C. what failure is and how to deal with failure

D. failure may be considered as a way towards success
