Sometimes even the best friends have fights. They disagree with each other and begin to argue. Sometimes they even stop talking to each other.
What can be done to help the two friends make up? Finding a good friend who knows about both of them very well to be a peacemaker is a good way. Maybe one day you will be a peacemaker for your good friends. Here are some useful communication strategies for you to use:
◆ State your feelings clearly but don't criticize them. Begin with “I feel…” instead of “You always…”
◆ Don't stop the other person's sentences.
◆ Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Try to see the other person's side of the disagreement.
◆ Look at the other person's eyes when you are talking.
◆ Ask questions to make sure that you understand the other person.
◆ Repeat the other person's ideas as you understand them.
◆Never put anyone down. Saying things like “You're stupid.” makes communication difficult.
Try to find a solution that makes the two friends happy. Never decide who is right and who is wrong. Instead, help them to find their own “winwin” solution. A “winwin” solution allows both of them to feel good. In this way, their friendship can be continued.

【題目】D. Answer the questions (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問題)
One of Britain’s bravest women told yesterday how she helped to catch suspected police killer David Bieber -- and was thanked with flowers by the police. It was also said that she could be in line for a share of up to £30,000 reward money.
Vicki Brown, 30, played a very important role in ending the nationwide manhunt. Vicki, who has worked at the Royal Hotel for four years, told of her terrible experience when she had to steal into Bibber’s bedroom and to watch him secretly. Then she waited alone for three hours while armed police prepared to storm the building.
She said: “I was very nervous. But when I opened the hotel door and saw 20 armed policemen lined up in the car park, I was so glad they were there.”
The alarm had been raised because Vicki became suspicious of the guest who checked in at 3 pm the day before New Year’s Eve with little luggage and wearing sunglasses and a hat pulled down over his face. She said: “He didn’t seem to want to talk too much and make any eye contact(接觸).” Vicki, the only employee on duty, called her bosses Margaret, 64, and husband Stan McKale, 65, who phoned the police at 11 pm.
Officers from Northumbria Police called Vicki at the hotel in Dunston, Gateshead, at about 11:30 pm to make sure that this was the wanted man. Then they kept in touch by phoning Vicki every 15 minutes.
“It was about ten past two in the morning when the phone went again and a policeman said ‘Would you go and make yourself known to the armed officers outside?’. My heart missed a beat,”
Vicki quietly showed eight armed officers through passages and staircases to the top floor room and handed over the key.
“I realized that my bedroom window overlooks that part of the hotel, so I went to watch. I could not see into the man’s room, but I could see the passage. The police kept shouting at the man to come out with his hands showing. Then suddenly he must have come out because they shouted for him to lie down while he was handcuffed.
【1】Vicki could get over £30,000 reward money, couldn’t she?
【2】How did Vicki feel when she opened the hotel door and saw 20 armed policeman lined up in the car park?
【3】Why did Vicki become suspicious of David Bieber?
【4】Where was David Bieber most probably handcuffed?
【5】How long did the whole event probably last from the moment Bieber came to the hotel to the arrival of some armed officers?

【題目】Answer the questions (根據(jù)以下內(nèi)容回答問題)
Some people are standing at a group of low hills in West Texas. Suddenly, they observe glowing reddish - orange lights. Are they the headlights of cars on the highway? Are they the lights of campfires? The people shout and point because the lights are moving! But they aren’t moving the way cars move. They shoot up in the air. They fall back to the earth. And then ... they simply disappear!
Every night, people go to observe the famous Marfa lights. The lights are named for the town of Marfa, Texas, where these lights can be seen in the distant hills east of the town. Over the years there have been many beliefs about these strange lights. One theory is that the lights are the headlights of cars driving down the road.
But that could not be true. Settlers in the 1880s wrote about the lights long before there were cars with headlights. At that time, pioneers thought the Marfa lights were the campfires of Apaches2 in the hills. When the pioneers would ride into the hills, they could find no evidence3 of campsites of fires. Later, the settlers learned that the Apaches, too, could see the lights. They thought the lights were stars that had come down the earth.
Some people say that the lights are moonlight shining on metal in the hills. Others say they are made by gases from swamps4. Some scientists have tried to prove that lights from planets or starts reflect5 in a strange way on the hills. That doesn’t help us understand why the lights “dance”. They move up and down, slow down and speed up. These dancing “stars”, the Marfa lights, stay a mystery.

【題目】 The fridge is considered necessary. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food list appeared with the label: “Store in the refrigerator.”
In my fridge-less fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthy. The milkman came every day, the grocer, the butcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times each week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus(剩余的)bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on food deliveries have ceased, fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country.
The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. Many well-tried techniques already existed -- natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...
What refrigeration did promote was marketing -- marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the world in search of a good price.
Consequently, most of the world’s fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the rich countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintaining an artificially-cooled space inside an artificially-heated house -- while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge.
The fridges’ effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet and turn off your fridge next winter. You may not eat the hamburgers, but at least you’ll get rid of that terrible hum.

D.the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s

A.Because people would not buy more food than was necessary.
B.Because food was delivered to people two or three times a week.
C.Because food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.
D.Because people had effective ways to preserve their food.
【3】Who benefited the least from fridges according to the author?
A.Inventors.B.Consumers.C.Manufacturers.D.Travelling salesmen.
【4】Which of the following phrases in the fifth paragraph indicates the fridge’s negative effect on the environment?
A.“Hum away continuously”.B.“Climatically almost unnecessary”.
C.“Artificially - cooled space.”D.“With mild temperatures.”
【5】What is the author’s overall attitude toward fridges?
A.Neutral.B.Critical.C.Objective.D.Compromising.
