【題目】

Winnie sat outside the Headmistress's office waiting to be called in. She wished she had not been caught down by the river at lunchtime. But it was too late now.

That morning, Winnie happened to be in the playground with a group of girls from the ninth grade. She liked hanging out with the older girls. She felt more important when she was with them. She especially admired Vicky. Vicky was always breaking the school rules, but somehow managed to get away with it.

Vicky told the group of girls she pinched a packet of cigarettes* from her dad's pocket. She invited them to follow her to the river at lunchtime for a smoke. They sat under the bridge and Vicky passed round the packet of cigarettes. Winnie had never smoked before. It tasted awful. The other girls started making fun of her. Then Vicky told Winnie to steal a packet of cigarettes from her dad and bring it to school for them to smoke. Winnie knew this was wrong but wanted so much to be part of the group. So she said they could count on her to bring a packet the next day.

Then, suddenly, before they could hide their cigarettes, Mr. Jackson, her class teacher was standing next to them. He was furious. Vicky threw the packet of cigarettes into Winnie and said, "She gave them to us. She stole them from her dad." But Mr. Jackson had seen and heard everything. He told them to go straight back to school and wait for him outside the Headmistress's office.

Now, sitting outside the Headmistress's office, Winnie knew she would be punished but in her heart she also knew the punishment was a stitch in time. She would never try another cigarette and would never again get mixed up with students like Vicky. Winnie was beginning to have second thoughts about Vicky. Because of Vicky, she was in trouble, too.

The door opened and Vicky came out. She was crying. Winnie had never seen Vicky cry before. She looked so different, so weak, so unimportant. In a flash Winnie realized Vicky was not a very nice person after all.

【題目】

A recent study suggests that teenagers who turn off the TV and sit down to family meals are less likely to suffer eating disorders. The study has connected eating together with lower rates of bulimia and anorexia. The meanings of bulimia and anorexia are eating too much, or eating at wrong times too often or eating very little. Besides, the study shows that teens who are used to eating round the table are less likely to take up smoking to lose weight.

Researcher Barbara said, “In many people’s opinion, teenagers don’t want to be around their parents very much, and they are too busy with their studies and spend more time with their friends.”

The study shows happy families have teenagers who eat with their parents often. These teens have less bad diet or dangerous eating habits. “For most parents, it is difficult to get their families together around the table seven days a week. But if they can prepare three family meals a week,it will be good for their children’s health,” Professor Fiese spoke out after reviewing 17 studies on eating ways and nutrition of almost 200,000 children and teenagers. She has found that teens who eat at least five meals a week with their families are 35% less likely to be “disordered eaters”. Even three family meals a week helped, with youngsters 12% less likely to be overweight than those who ate with their families less often. They were also 24% more likely to eat healthy foods and have healthy eating habits than those who didn’t share three meals with their families.

“Teens can also use family meals as a time to get their thoughts across,” Professor Fiese said, “Family meals give them a place where they can go regularly to check in with their parents and express themselves freely.”

1Which of the following is NOT a reason why children don’t eat with their parents?

A.They are too busy with their studies.B.They think their parents are too strict.

C.They spend a lot of time with friends.D.They don’t want to be with their parents too often.

2What advantage of the family meals is mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.Teens can form good eating habit.

B.Teens can ask their parents for advice.

C.Teens can come up with some good ideas.

D.Teens can express their thoughts to their parents.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Parents will have meals on time if they eat with their children.

B.Teenagers who often have meals with their parents are cleverer.

C.It is good for family members to watch TV while having meals.

D.Teenagers have good eating habits because they usually have meals with their parents.

China's high-speed train, the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the World's fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about 3 hours.

Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and working at your office in Shanghai in only 2 or 3 hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there by high-speed train.

Sounds unusual, doesn't it? But it’s not impossible with the development of China's high-speed railway system. And that's not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan - to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and Western Europe in the end.

China is trying to enlarge its own high-speed railway to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, reaching London and Singapore at last.

China has planned three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via* Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe.

If China's plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under forty-eight hours.

1From the passage we know working in Shanghai and _____ in 2 or 3 hours will be possible by high-speed train.

A.shopping in SingaporeB.fishing in Malaysia

C.having dinner in BeijingD.riding horses in Kazakhstan

2According to the second project, the high-speed train will probably reach _____ at last.

A.RussiaB.GermanyC.VietnamD.Uzbekistan

3With the help of the high-speed train, people could move quickly from London to Beijing in under _____ days.

A.2B.3C.10D.15
