Everywhere in the world there are different ways of behaving. When we meet someone, everything we say and do expresses our cultural background. So if you want to get on with someone from another culture, it helps to understand something about these differences.
Even how we stand depends on our culture. English people talk to each other at an average (平均
的) distance of 130 cm, while Italians chat at an average distance of 80 cm. So Italians can think that
English people are unfriendly because they stand too far away! And English people can think that Italians are too close.
Touching is also cultural. The French touch much more than Americans. A French couple may touch 100 times in half an hour while an American couple may only touch twice! And French teenagers touch each other much more than American teens.

Almost all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But sleeping can also be dangerous because other animals may hurt those who are sleeping. This leads to many different ways of sleeping that help them stay safe. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Almost all bats sleep upside down. They hang from a branch of a tree or the ceiling of a cave. Up high, bats are safe from most other animals. If they are in danger, they just fly away.
A dolphin sleeps with just half its brain at a time. It must stay awake to breathe and to watch for danger. Dolphin mothers and babies can go without sleep for as long as two months to stay safe.
Some ducks sleep with just half their brains, too. These ducks often sleep in a line. The ducks at both ends help to keep the group safe. They keep one eye open to watch for danger. The ducks in the middle sleep deeply with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe air, but that doesn’t stop some of them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Sleeping deep underwater helps these seals stay safe from animals that hunt them near the surface.
Horses often sleep standing up. Their legs lock in place so they don’t fall over. If a horse is lying down, it needs a long time to get up. A horse can run from danger more quickly if it is already standing.
A flamingo can sleep while standing on one leg. The standing leg locks so it stays straight. The other leg remains close to the flamingo’s body. Its head rests on its back. A flamingo lives (and sleeps) near many other birds to stay safe.
Some seabirds can sleep while they fly. These large birds spend most of their lives over the ocean. They are in danger on the water, but they are safe in the air. They fly for many hours without flapping(拍打)their wings. Sometimes they sleep while they are flying.
Would you like to sleep how they sleep?
1.The animals that sleep with half their brains are _______.

Have you ever been in a conflict(沖突)? Do you know how to solve it? Conflict resolution is a peaceful way of trying to solve a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what they think happened to cause it. The person who listens to both sides is called the mediator(調(diào)解人).
After both sides tell what they think happened to cause the conflict, they discuss ways to solve it. They try to come up with a “resolution” that both sides agree to. They cannot be angry during the communication. Everyone should use good listening and attending skills while talking. If voices get too loud or it appears that someone is angry, the mediator will speak up and have them treat each other with respect. After different suggestions are shared in how to mediate the conflict, it is time for
discussing the best solution(解決辦法).
Here is an example of how conflict resolution works step by step in a school playground setting:
● Someone says a student pushed him on the football field.
● The person who was accused as the “pusher” says it was actually an accident.
● The person who was pushed gets the mediator.
● The mediator takes the two persons to a quieter place, away from others to talk.
● The mediator calms them down and lets them know he understands their feelings.
●Each person describes what happened.
● The mediator repeats what he heard, so it is clear to everyone.
● The mediator asks for ideas to solve the problem.
● The two persons offer their own solutions.
● The two persons have a discussion and come to an agreement.
● The mediator makes sure the persons follow the solution.
● The mediator offers praise for solving the problem.
Conflict resolution can be used in many environments. It encourages people to tell what really happened, to share their feelings, and to work together peacefully to solve the problem. It offers people workable steps to reach an agreement with the help of a mediator.
1.According to the passage, if two students have had a fight, they had better .
A.call the police B. get a mediator
C. ask parents for ideas D. describe the fight to teachers
2.In conflict resolution, the mediator’s job is to .
A.describe what really happened to both sides
B.help both sides reach an agreement in a proper way
C.listen to both sides and then punish the trouble maker
D.write down what both sides have explained in the communication
3.The underlined words “was accused” in this passage might mean “ ” in Chinese. A. 被懲罰 B. 被輕視 C. 被指責(zé) D. 被否定
4.The writer gives the example in the passage in order to .
A.show how a mediator works in a football match
B.help us know the importance of a mediator in daily life
C.show how conflict resolution is used in different environments
D.help us clearly understand the workable steps in conflict resolution
