My name is Christine and I’d like to tell you how I learned English.
Here in Brazil we started to have English classes in high school. When I finished school, I wasn’t good at English. But later, I found it interesting to listen to English songs and watch English films. So I decided to study English at Fisk School when I was thirty-five years old. I had class with sixty teenagers in a big classroom at that time. Because I had to look after my son, I stopped studying at the school after seven months. But I kept studying by myself. I learned by listening to English songs and watching films. When I had problems, I tried to find answers on the Inernet. During that time, my friends helped me a lot.
Now, I have no problem in speaking or reading. Most people are surprised when I speak in English.

I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.
This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.

In the Charles E. Johnson Elementary School in New York, there is a special radio. It gives people warnings(警報(bào))about bad weather.
One day, there came a sound from the radio. This sound brought the piece of news:a heavy storm was coming. William Tom, principal(校長)of the school, asked teachers to bring children indoors and put them in a safe place at once.
Minutes later, the storm came. However, because of the warning of the radio and the quick work of the principal, no one was hurt.

The U.S. government hopes there will be more such success stories. It plans to give this kind of radios to all 97,000 public schools in the country.
Every year, more than 10,000 big thunderstorms, 2,500 floods, 1,000 tornadoes(龍卷風(fēng))and some hurricanes(颶風(fēng))take place in the U.S., so the warning radios are very useful. Recently the “China dream” has been the subject of a public topic. Although it is quite common for Chinese people to dream of an empowered or a prosperous(繁榮) China, most people also have their own dreams. Throughout China’s thousands of years of history, these “China dreams” have always existed. Do you have a “China dream”? I brought up this topic with several young Chinese students with higher U.S. educational backgrounds. Unsurprisingly, they all had their own heartfelt hopes and dreams for their native country.

Fred Wang, an MBA candidate in the U.S. said, “I dream of equal chance for the young in China. Equality means all young people can compete fairly, based on the rule-of-law no matter whether they are rich or poor.”
Yujie Zhao, another MBA candidate in California said, “I dream of a happy family with an affordable home. I dream of having the best education for my children so they will not lose at the starting line, and I dream of being able to take good care of my parents after they retire(退休).” She said, “It seems like all my dreams are about family, but it is so true for most Chinese young dreamers today.”
Yiqiong Zhang, an MBA graduate from the US shared her dreams. “I have a dream which I have been holding for many years, that is after working hard for about 20 to 25 years, I can have enough money to build and manage a small bookstore or a flower shop. Besides working hard, I am able to enjoy life: to play the piano, to hike and to enjoy a two-month-long vacation every year. This may be a common dream among young Chinese students.”
There is no doubt that all of these young students have their own “China dream”. They all love China, they all love chasing their dreams. Beautiful “China Dream” requires hard work. Everyone should work hard to make their dream come true.

Working Christmas Day
It was unusually quiet in the emergency room (急診室) on December25.
I didn't think there would be any patients, complaining about having to work on. Just then five people showed up at my desk, a pale woman and four small children.
"Are you all sick?" I asked doubtfully.
"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head.
But when it came to descriptions of their problems, things got a little unclear. Two of the children had headaches, but I couldn't find any normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was hurting. The mother complained of a cough but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong, but I didn't say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She replied, "Take your time; it's warm in here."
I checked the form after the admitting clerk had finished her work with the family. No address — they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.
I looked out at the family standing by the Christmas tree. The youngest one was pointing at the television and shouting something to her mother. The oldest one was looking at the colorful Christmas tree.
I went back to the nurses' station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working Christmas, turned to pity for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into action, much as we do when there's a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.
We were all offered a free meal in the hospital dining hall on Christmas Day, so we prepared a big one for our Christmas guests. We needed presents, too. We put together oranges and apples in a basket. We collected from different departments candies, crayons and other things that could be presents. As seriously as we met the physical needs of the patients that came to us that day, our team worked to meet the needs, and beyond the expectations, of a family who just wanted to be warm on Christmas Day.
Later, as the family walked to the door to leave, the four-year-old came running back, gave me a hug and whispered, "Thanks for being our angels today."
小題1:Why did the family come to the hospital?
A.They were sick.B.They were cold and hungry.
C.They wanted to visit friends.D.They got all their money lost.
小題2:How did the writer and her workmates help the family?
A.They offered a free meal to them.
B.They bought some presents for them.
C.They sent for a doctor for them.
D.They asked them to stay overnight in the hospital.
小題3:What can we learn from the passage?
A.The mother was seriously ill.
B.The family were driven out of the hospital.
C.The writer and her workmates always liked to work on Christmas.
D.The family thanked the writer and her workmates for their kindness.

根據(jù)下面一篇短文的內(nèi)容判斷下列句子的正誤,正確的用 “A” 表示,錯(cuò)誤的用“B”表示。(共5小題,計(jì)5分)
I have never taken cooking classes. I learned cooking from my mother because she was really interested in teaching me how to cook. The main reason for this was because when my mother got married, she didn't know how to cook anything, not even an egg. My grandmother never allowed her to stay in the kitchen when she was cooking.
My mother did not start to cook until she was twenty-five years old. In the beginning, it was very hard for her. Therefore, she had to take cooking classes to prepare(準(zhǔn)備)our meals. After having that experience, she decided to teach me how to cook because she didn't want me to have the same experience.
I remember when I was seven years old, I started to learn cooking from my mother. Sometimes we prepared the meals that my mother already knew how make, and sometimes we prepared meals from recipes. Thanks to that experience, now I don't need any help to cook a meal. I can cook for myself or for a group of people; it doesn't matter. I will do the same with my children because I don't want them to have the same experience as my mother. If one day I am not with them, I want to be sure that they can continue their life without me.
小題1:The author learned cooking from her mother because they all liked cooking.
小題2:The author’s mother learned cooking by taking cooking classes.
小題3:The author began to learn to cook when she was seven years old.
小題4:The author learned cooking only by preparing the meals she knew quite well.
小題5:The author will do as her mother to make her children know the way of cooking.
