Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology , laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable( 便攜式的) computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources(資源). State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff(職員) use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “ Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

The students will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. 故選A。
根據(jù)At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff(職員) use computers.可知A選項與文意不符;根據(jù)Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop.

The idea of what shaking the head means is not always the same in different countries. Maybe some visitors would be surprised when they first come to India. When they talk to an Indian, they would find he would often shake his head. The visitors might think that the Indian doesn’t like what they say. But in fact, they would be completely wrong.
Indians always shake their heads when they talk to others. It doesn’t mean “No”. If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or he will be in trouble.
One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired a car and asked an Indian to drive him. When he told his driver to take him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last the officer, of course, got angry.
“How dare you refuse my order?” he shouted, “Drive me to my office at once!”
The driver answered in quite a loud voice, too. “Yes, sir!” But to the officer’s surprise, the driver shook his head at the same time.
The car started and the foreign officer was now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he nodded with a smile, “‘No’ means ‘Yes’ here!”
【小題1】What does shaking one’s head mean all over the world?
A.Yes. | B.No. | C.Glad. | D.Yes or No. |
A.Shake your head. | B.Nod your head. |
C.Speak in a loud voice. | D.Say it again and again. |
A.He went there to visit his friend. | B.He went there to buy a car. |
C.He went there to learn driving. | D.He went there because of his job. |
A.Because the driver didn’t understand him. |
B.Because the driver still shook his head after he said again. |
C.Because the driver didn’t like the officer. |
D.Because the driver didn’t answer in a loud voice. |
A.When you are in India, you should always shake your head. |
B.You shouldn’t shake your head if you’re a driver. |
C.Shaking head will make others get angry. |
D.Different countries have different customs. |

Who help you most in your everyday life, families, charities, or friends? Don’t forget about your neighbours! Neighbours help you more than anyone else in your daily life. So it is important to have good neighbours.
What does it take to be a good neighbour? Here is some advice:
Good fences(柵欄) make good neighbours. One of the most important things in being a good neighbour is to respect a person’s privacy(隱私). If you go rushing over as soon as new neighbours move in, they may think you are going to come over at all hours of the day, not respecting their privacy.
It is always a good idea to be friendly to everyone in the neighbourhood. This can not only put you on good terms(關(guān)系和睦) with them, but will also be a kind of protection for your family and home. If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out to work, they will think you respect them. If you are friendly to them, they are much more likely to watch out for anything wrong going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens.
Another way of being a good neighbour is to be helpful in their hour of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand, it is good to offer your help. They will do the same if you are in trouble.
In a word, if you respect a person’s privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbour and anyone would be happy to have you next door!
【小題1】. Can you r neighbour help you than anyone else in your daily life?

C
It’s something familiar to all parents of young children: you’re in a busy shopping street and your child wants to pee (小便) and he just can’t hold it any longer. But two parents’ decision to let their child relieve (釋放) himself has caused much attention in China.
By now, it seems, the whole Chinese Internet is familiar with what happened on a crowded Hong Kong shopping street. A mother holds a nappy (尿布) while her two-year-old pees. A passerby took pictures which then were put online. The woman explained that they had found a public toilet (廁所) but saw there was a long queue, so she had no other choice but to let their child to relieve himself on the street instead.
Why has this one child’s act caused so much upset? Allowing a child under 12 to “answer the call of nature in any public street” is against the law in Hong Kong and the parents will face a 2,000 Hong Kong Dollar ($250) fine (罰款). But the on-line chatter has put all the attention on the fact that this family were tourists from mainland China, rather than being locals. “For Hong Kongers, people might think from time to time that mainlanders are not so polite and often break the public rules,” says Martin Yip of BBC. Charmaine Chui, who was born in Hong Kong, told BBC she feels angry to have seen mainland tourists peeing in shopping centers and restaurants. “Hong Kong is a beautiful, modern city. What do these people think of it?” she says.
In mainland China, there has also been criticism of the parents’ behavior. But most of the people say they find the parents’ behavior understandable as they had tried to find a toilet for their child and the mother used a paper nappy rather than simply allowing the baby to pee on the ground.
【小題1】The child peed ________ in HK.
A.on a crowded shopping street | B.in a public toilet |
C.a(chǎn)t home | D.in a restaurant |
A.understandable | B.sorry |
C.a(chǎn)ngry | D.happy |
A.A policeman took photos of the 2-year-old child and put them online. |
B.It’s OK for children under 12 to pee wherever they like in Hong Kong. |
C.All the Chinese feel very angry about the parents’ behavior. |
D.In mainland China, most of the people find the parents’ behavior understandable. |

Some students like to translate(翻譯) when they practice speaking English. Translation is a very difficult exercise. During a conversation, we don’t really have time to translate what we understand. When we use translation, we don’t develop the necessary reflexes (反應(yīng)能力) needed to speak and understand a foreign language. It is important to build up reflexes right from the beginning. It will help you later when your skills are good enough to take a conversation.
Here is some advice on how to build up reflexes when you only have basic words and grammar.
Relax!
No one is checking you except yourself! Look at each communication experience as an adventure. Try to relax first when you speak English. You will pick up on small details.
Context(上下文) is your friend.
What is context? It means the situation in which something happens and that helps to understand it. (2)We can make good guesses about what is being said by using the context. It will be easy when you think about the context. You will feel much more comfortable and confident if you remember that.
Ask questions what you want to know.
After you have proudly asked for tickets at the train station, the booking-office clerk (售票員) spoke a long sentence to you about the place and the time. You may be a little unclear or have only understood a part of it. However, you can ask questions about what you want to know, such as, “Did you say…?” and “Would you repeat that more slowly?”. So that you can easily move the communication forward. Use body language.
Use body language to go with your words when you __(1)___ to learn a __(1)_____ language. The person you are speaking to only wants to understand you and will be carefully listening to you. As you become more proficient (熟練的) in your second language, you will depend(依靠) more on the language and less on body language. But there is no shame for a beginner.

What is the strongest part of your body? Your head? Bones? It’s your teeth! There is a special thing called enamel (牙釉質(zhì)) in teeth. It is the hardest thing in the human body and keeps bacteria (細菌) away. However, teeth are vulnerable (易受傷害的) to problems and disease. September 20 is National Teeth-loving Day in China. Let’s pay attention to the health of our teeth.
Tooth (1) are (1) around the world. Most children and young adults have tooth decay (齲齒). A study published on China Health Monthly magazine this year showed that 40.74 percent of a sample (抽樣) of 1,306 Chinese students under age 15 had decayed teeth.
(2)Food that is rich in sugar increases the risk of tooth decay. After you eat, bacteria go crazy over the sugar on your teeth, like ants at a picnic. The bacteria turn sugar into acids (酸) that eat away at tooth enamel. This cause holes in your teeth.
Another common problem is crooked teeth (齙牙). When your new teeth begin to grow and the old teeth haven’t fallen out, there isn’t enough space for the new ones. This causes crooked teeth.
Don’t worry. Here are some ways to keep your teeth healthy.
Brush at least twice a day – in the morning and before bedtime.
Learn to use dental floss (牙線). The floss gets rid of food that’s hidden where your toothbrush can’t get it.
Visit a dentist. He or she can check if you have any dental problems and help you clean your teeth.
Pay attention to what you eat. It is better to eat lots of fruits and vegetables instead of fries and drink water instead of soda.
Wear braces (牙套) to make your teeth straight and beautiful.

The world’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes, is back on our screens.
The new BBC TV series of Sherlock was broadcast in the UK on Jan 1. But the history of Sherlock dates back 127 years.
Since the creation of Holmes in 1887, he has been taking us on adventures (冒險) one after another.

In the morning, we went camping in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were looking forward to a wonderful two-day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.
However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o’clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower(陣雨). Unluckily, none(沒有人) of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no place to hide.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we reached the campsite (野營地). It was even worse that our small compass (指南針) showed that we went to the wrong way. We lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision(決定)because it was raining heavily. Chris said we could put up a tent to hide in, so Mary and Tom helped to put up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we weren’t able to light(點燃) the fire, because everything was wet. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up (放棄)the camping trip because all of us were very tired.
