Nowadays, many children spend many hours a day looking at computer screens or other digital products(數(shù)碼產(chǎn)品). Some eye care professionals (專業(yè)人士) say all the screen time has caused more children to have eye problems.

Nathan Warford is an optometrist ( 驗光師) in Florida, USA. He says he has seen an increase in problems in children.

“Some children come into the office because their parents have found that they have red eyes. Others come because their degree of short-sightedness is increasing very fast and their parents are worried,” he said.

Part of the problem is that even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, some children don't tell their parents. These children are afraid that their parents would take their games or the computer away.

Another part of the problem is that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when they look at the screen. When a person uses a computer or other digital products, he or

she blinks about a third as much as we normally do in everyday life. If we blink less often, our eyes can't stay wet or are too tired and they will not be protected like

normal.

【題目】If you’re one of those people who like to use apps(應用程序) to kill time, you’re not alone. In fact, using apps has now become part of everyday life. Here are four apps for you to spend your free time. Have fun with these cool apps below!

Baicizhan

First of all, the app tells you how many English words you need to learn every day. That’s not all. It can also be very fun. The learning process is like playing a guessing game. Instead of just showing the Chinese and English meanings of a new word, the app asks you to first choose the correct picture from four, according to an English description. And then, you can practice remembering the new word in other ways.

Douban FM

A digital (數(shù)字的) radio app like Douban FM might be the right music app for you. Without a play list, you will never know what the next song is. Songs just keep playing one by one. You can use the “heart”, “trash” and “skip” buttons (按鈕) to mark the songs you like, don’t like, and want to cut short. Those marked with a heart will be kept in another list as your favorites for you to enjoy again at any time you want.

Moment Camera

App stores have too many camera apps with filters(濾鏡). They are all designed to make your smart phone camera better. But which one gives you the best influence Moment Camera. Many people like this app because of its sequence shots (連拍) and different-sized frames (邊框) for photos. But the best thing about the app is not what it does, but what it leaves out. It is simple, clean, and easy to use.

Flipboard

It is one of the hottest news apps right now. But the difference with Flipboard is that you can make everything personal to you. Open up the app, choose whatever interests you, and click the “+” button. In the end you’ll have your own magazine with news, articles, and information. So unlike the boring magazines you read in the past, you can be sure that every page of this one will interest you.

7 January, 2014

A new report says more and more international students are attending colleges and universities in the United States. It also notes a large increase in the number of international students from China.

These findings are from the latest Open Doors Report. The report documents the record number of international students in the United States during 2012, 2013 school year. It says more than seven hundred sixty-four thousand four-hundred such students were attending American colleges and universities during the last two years. That represents an increase of almost six percent than one year earlier.

On the other hand, the number of Americans studying overseas (海外) increased by one percent, which reached nineteen thousand this year.

The report says one hundred ninety-four thousand students at American colleges and universities were from

China. That is an increase of more than twenty-three percent over the year before. Peggy Blumenthal, an expert(專家) of international education, described the effect of the increase in Chinese students.

"Now they have been coming for some time. But this year was the highest level ever." She says many Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children. The children mainly choose to study in America.

"We know many of them have enough income to be able to afford to send them anywhere in the world that they want to go. And for the most part, looking around the world, Chinese students still prefer to come to the United States as their choice."

Chinese students are not the only ones who want to attend American colleges and universities. After China, India sends the second largest number of students to the United States for higher education. India has about one hundred thousand students in American schools. South Korea is third with about seventy two thousand students.

Why do so many foreign students study in the United States? Peggy Blumenthal provides one reason.

"The advantage America has is that we have a huge system and a very perfect system. So there are over four thousand universities and colleges in the United States. Among them are some top ones in the world, and what that tells us is there is still a lot of room to host international students."

Foreign students represent less than four percent of the total student population in American higher education. And from Learning English, that's the VOA Special English Education Report. I'm Bob Doughty. Thanks for listening.

B. The USA has a huge and a very perfect education system.

C. There is a lot of room to host international students in the USA.
