The world lost one of the most respected leaders. Nelson Mandela, the former (前任的) South African president, passed away on Dec. 5, 2013. The whole world felt sorry about the death of Mandela, a great man of history.
Mandela is mostly remembered for his efforts to end apartheid(種族隔離) in South Africa. Mandela was born in 1918. In South Africa, there are both black and white people. But at that time, Black people couldn’t live or travel where they wanted. They didn’t have the right to vote, either. Mandela didn’t think that was right.
He organized many activities against it, but he was sent to prison for 27 years. Under international pressure, the government set Mandela free in 1990. Great changes in the law began to end apartheid. At that time, Mandela chose to forgive his enemies. He shook hands with the people who wanted him dead. He also encouraged black people to forgive the whites.
Because of his forgiveness, Mandela is remembered as a moral model(道德楷模) by the whole world.
In1993,Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize. A year later, he became the first black president of South Africa.
Both black people and white people voted. Apartheid ended. In 1999, Mandela left office at the highest point of his power.

Car Free Day encourages drivers to give up their cars for a day to protect the environment . It was first started by 34 cities in France and September 22 is Car Free Day . The first Car Free Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. The slogan for the day is “If we drive for one less day , we can have one more nice day .”
Organized activities are held in many cities on Car Free Day . The public transportation is free on that day. In London, they have special “green areas”. Walking, biking, and public transportation are encouraged. The streets are open only to walkers, bicycles and buses from 7:00a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In Beijing , it asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike to work . More and more people are joining in the activity. In the first quarter of this year ,Beijing only had 52 blue sky days , and you may see haze(霧霾) almost every day ! We must do more for Car Free Day as a Beijing driver said , “ We may not change the weather, but we can choose not to drive.”
