When you get tired of homework, several minutes’ walk in a nearby green park helps you relax at once. Or you may stand facing the lake or the sea. They’ll calm (not to be excited or nervous) you just like the green plants.
Wonder why? Color is a key part of the answers. Since it is so, green and blue help make people feel more quiet and safe.
All colors have special power. Scientists have found that many colors have specific effects (效果) on people’s minds and feelings.
Try an easy and interesting experiment and you’ll see how color “misleads” you sometimes. Wrap (包裝) two boxes of the same size with colored paper, one red and the other white. Then weigh the two boxes with your hands. Which one is heavier? Most people will think that the red box is heavier, even though they weigh the same.
Colors can affect (影響) learning. Scientists have found that students spend more time reading if they read information written in blue text. Blue helps most people calm down and think more.
Smart (clever) uses of colors in daily life are to be seen everywhere. Hospital and libraries seldom (很少) paint their walls, tables and desks red. They use light colors, like light blue or green. Red makes people excited while light colors help them relax. Haven’t worked out how color affects your daily life? Start with your small room. Try to make some changes in it and you’ll get to know how important color is!

There isn’t a cure (治愈方法) for the cold, but you can take some medicine to make you feel better. For example, you can take aspirin (阿司匹林) to get rid of (擺脫) your headache. Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people knew that some plants made them feel better. For example, the juice of lemons (檸檬) makes a sore throat better. When does music in public places become noise pollution?
You may like at least some kind of music. But the problem is that, in lots of places, you’re made to hear somebody else’s choice in music. Say you’ve just landed at an airport. At the airport, the “background” (背景)music may be played loudly.
When you are on the way to your hotel, there may be another kind of music played by the taxi driver. Then you finally reach your hotel. But when you are taking the elevator(電梯),there is elevator music.
You go out to dinner and end up in a place where the owner of the restaurant thinks music will help make you eat more and spend more. Then a person playing the violin comes around. This is called the “music wallpaper”. It is to make you buy more and eat a lot.  Even the government thinks this is “noise pollution,” especially when the music is too loud.
Noise pollution may be bad for our hearing. It’s also bad for some of our daily activities, such as sleeping, conversations and so on.
The fact that you can’t see, taste or smell it may help explain why it has not received as much attention as other kinds of pollution, such as air pollution or water pollution. The air around us is always filled with sounds, but most of us would not think we are surrounded(包圍) by noise. This can be bad for our health. So many people like soft and quiet music in their house.
小題1:In the restaurant, the music is to make you _____________.
A.have a nice meal
B.eat more food and spend more money
C.enjoy some wonderful music
D.have a great time in the restaurant
小題2:This passage doesn’t talk about ___________.
A.food pollutionB.water pollution
C.a(chǎn)ir pollution D.noise pollution
小題3:Music in public places becomes noise pollution because __________.
A.it’s played at the airport
B.it’s played by the taxi driver
C.it’s played when you are taking the elevator
D.you are made to hear someone else’s choice in music
小題4:From the passage we know that ___________.
A.music that is too loud is bad for our health
B.people pay as much attention to noise pollution as they do to air pollution
C.people like loud music in their house
D.most people think that there’s lots of noise around us

It’s cool, it’s hot, and everyone is doing it. People talk about it often, and friends tell other friends how good they look. Sound like a fashion? In fact, it’s another trend (流行趨勢(shì)): “blog”. What’s a blog? A blog is a personal online diary. The word “blogger” means a person who writes diaries online.
Many bloggers are teenagers who log (進(jìn)入) onto websites to discuss anything in their lives. Many of today’s teenagers are not afraid to openly discuss everything in their lives. Teenagers complain about parents and homework. They share diaries, post songs from the latest bands (樂(lè)隊(duì)) and show pictures of theirs. They write their own poems, say something about their girlfriends or boyfriends and complain to each other or offer support. But mostly they just write down what they do every day.
However, many parents are worried about these young bloggers. Parents see the kids talking about how they got drunk last weekend and how they don’t like studying. They are using language that is surprising to their parents. Besides hearing from their friends, teen bloggers also get messages from strangers. Most of the time, it’s older men asking to meet teenage girls. “These strange men are dangerous for my kids. They sometimes teach my kids bad words,” said Cara Cabral, a mother of two.
Many teenagers and young adults know it’s not safe to use blogs on the Internet. They know they are putting information about themselves in a place they can be seen by anyone. But teenagers are unwilling to give up these new communication tools that have become a way of life for many of them.

Biggie Burger, a new fast-food restaurant, will soon be opened in the town. A large group of kids and parents were holding signs shouting outside it yesterday. They were there because they didn’t want the restaurant to open. Never!
“This kind of food is really bad for us!” said Diana, “It’s high in salt, fat, and sugar. it’s unhealthy and we are going to say ‘no’ to it!”

Sandy’s dad, a cleaner, agrees, “Biggie Burger’s prices are just right for a family like ours.”
Michael, who owns a toy shop next door to Biggie Burger, is excited, too. “Maybe people who come for a Biggie Burger will spend a few minutes in my store and pick up something.”

We have always been interested in the moon. 2000 years ago people already knew it moved around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.
When scientists could use telescopes(望遠(yuǎn)鏡) to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on Earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth’s gravity millions of years earlier.
In 1969 moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of Earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 million years ago, something about the size of Mars hit Earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
In the future, even though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.

Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources(資源)are nonrenewable(不可再生的). That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world. One example of these resources is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.
There is a second reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often, it is put into garbage dumps(垃圾場(chǎng)). Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps ill be filled up with all this trash.
There are three ways to cut down on trash.
One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used again. Old newspapers may become paper bags. A glassware can be melted(熔化)and made into a bottle.
Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use a bottle again that can hold mustard(芥末醬)or something else.
The third way to cut down on trash is to reduce the amount of trash you make, for example, stopping buying things that you don’t need in the first place. That reduces the amount of the earth’s resources.
