Mother's Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors mothers in the United States. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It became an official holiday in the country at the start of the 20th century as a way to honor mothers whose sons had died in war.

The holiday is celebrated in a number of ways. People give mothers gifts like flowerscards, and jewelry to thank them for all their hard work.A popular symbol of the holiday is the carnation. This is because when the holiday first began in the U. S. people were encouraged to wear a red carnation if their mother was alive or a white carnation if their mother was dead. Many people take their mothers out for a special meal. In fact,Mother's Day is the most popular date in the U. S. for people to go out and eat and it is said that people spend billions on meals and gifts. Mother's Day is also the most popular day to make long distance calls in the U. S.It is the second most popular gift-giving day after Christmas.

Since its establishment,Mother's Day has been criticized for becoming highly commercialized(商業(yè)化的).In fact, the founder of the U. S. holiday,Anna Jarvis, began protesting the holiday and was even arrested for disturbing the peace for demonstrating. Jarvis's own mother started the campaign to establish(創(chuàng)建)a mother's holiday during the American Civil War.

Mothers are not the only people celebrated on this day. All mother figures including grandmothersgreat-grandmothersstepmothers,and foster mothers are honored on the holiday. 【題目】D. Answer the questions (根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問題):

A jobless man wanted to apply for the position (職位) of “office boy” at a company. The manager interviewed him and then gave him a test: clean the floor. The man passed the test; he cleaned the floor very well.

“You are hired (雇傭),” the manager told the man with a big smile. “Give me your email address, and I’ll send you the table to fill out to be hired here.

The man replied, “I don’t have a computer, or email!”

“I’m sorry,” said the manager. “If you don’t have email, that means you do not exist (存在). And we cannot hire persons who do not exist.”

The man was very disappointed. He didn’t know what to do. He only has $10 with him. Once that was spent, he wouldn’t have any money to buy even food. He went to the supermarket and bought a box of tomatoes with his $10. He went from door to door and sold the tomatoes in small bags in less than two hours. He doubled his money. He went on doing this three times, and went back with $80 that day. He realized that he could make a living this way.

Five years later, the man became one of the biggest food sellers in the company. He started to plan his family’s future. He decided to take out insurance on his life so that if he were to die, they would have enough money. He called an insurance broker, a man who sells insurance. At the end of the conversation, the broker asked him for his email address.

The man replied, “I don’t have email.”

The broker was very surprised. “You don’t have email, and yet have become so rich. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had email?” he explained.

The man thought for a while, and replied, “An office boy in a company!”

If you have lost your job or just failed an interview, it doesn’t matter. Think of the positive… Good days are on the way and something better will happen to you.

1Was the manager satisfied with what the jobless man did in the test?

2Why didn’t the manager hire the jobless man?

3From the sentence “He doubled his money”, how much did the man have then?

4What did the man do in order to plan his family’s future?

5In the broker’s opinion, how would the man be if he had email?

6Which personality (性格) do you think makes the jobless man successful? Your reason?

Comfort Zone

I would never forget what I learned from the day when I left my junior high school. On the last day our teacher told us something_______that I would like to share with you.

He began by drawing a man standing in the middle of a circle. To make it more interesting, he drew things like a house, a car and a few friends inside the circle.

He asked, “Can anyone tell me what this is?” In a long silence, one student decided to______his idea,”The world?” The teacher said, “That’s close. This is your Comfort Zone. Inside your circle you have all the things that are inportant to you. Your home, your family, your friends and your job. People feel that inside this circle they are safe from any______.”

“Can anyone tell me what happens when you step out of this circle?” A strong silence came over the room. The same student replied,”You are afraid.” Another student said, “You may make mistakes.” The silence continued and our teacher smiled and asked,” When you make mistakes, what can the result be?” The first student said,” You______something.”

“Exactly, you are learning.”O(jiān)ur teacher turned to the blackboard and drew an arrow(箭頭) ____from the man to the outside of the circle. He went on saying,”When you leave your Comfort Zone, you put yourself out there, in a______that you are not comfortable with, The result is that you learn something that you did not know and you enlarge your knowledge to become a better person.”He turned again to the blackboard and drew a bigger circle around the original(原來的)circle, and______a few new things like more friends, a big house, etc.

A lesson from this story is that if you stay inside your Comfort Zone you will never be able to open your eyes to the outside world and learn, When you step out of your Comfort Zone, you will______make your circle bigger to challenge your mind and grow to be stronger, and all in all be a better person.

There’s no place like home

Some people dream of having a home ‘just like the ones in decorating magazines’. That sort of beautifully stylish home may be n1, but for a truly special place to live, why not choose a home unlike any other in the neighbourhood? The unique(獨一無二的) houses on these pages challenge people to reconsider what a home is s2 to look like.

Environmentally friendly homes are getting a lot of a3 these days. Earthships, for example, are unusual homes made from materials like mud, straw and reused wood. The designers of earthships combine these natural materials with recycled i4, such as bottles, cans and old tyres. These homes show their belief that, when it comes to saving the environment, ‘if you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.’

Additionally many of these homes use wind or solar power. They are designed to collect and recycle water, and the people who live in them often add a greenhouse in which to grow food. As a result, if you live in an earthship, your monthly living costs will d5 to almost zero. For people who want to try one out, the Phoenix Earthship in the US is available as holiday accommodation(住宿).

Shipping containers are now being reused to make a6 type of environmentally friendly home. A number of architects have started changing individual containers into holiday homes. Alternatively they can be combined to make office blocks and blocks of flats, such as those Container City in London, England.

With all of the examples of imaginative homes, it is clear that people no longer need to settle for ordinary living spaces. One thing is sure: people living in homes that look as s7 as these never have to give anyone their address. They can just say, ‘Look for the weird house. You will know it when you see it.’
