Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena(現(xiàn)象).It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface(表面)of the Sun and gives out 30,000 amps of electricity(電).It can travel at 100, 000 kilometres per hour and has the ability to hit an object up to 40 kilometres away. About 1,000 people around the world are killed by lightning every day.
Only about ten percent of people struck by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured, with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brain, it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects. Some blind people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological(心理的)test showed her intelligence (智力)had greatly improved, and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below freezing in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm? The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing, or water. If you are stuck(困住)outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do mot think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.
Strangely, lightning seems to prefer some people to others. If you are a man, you are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!

For more than 60 years, Lego(樂高)bricks have sparked children’s imaginations. Now, a new version of these toys is in the works. They're called Lego Braille Bricks.
Lego Braille Bricks are designed to help people learn Braille. That’s a system of writing in which letters are represented by raised dots(凸起的點). Blind people(盲人)use their fingertips to read them. According to the World Health Organization, 36 million people worldwide are blind. In the United States, however, only ten percent of blind children learn Braille. Lego Braille Bricks can help change that. The small knobs on the bricks are arranged as Braille letters. Blind children can use these knobs to learn Braille. Lego plans to launch Braille bricks next year. For some schools, kits(成套工具) will be free. Each kit will contain about250 bricks. Along with the alphabet(字母表) the bricks will feature numbers and math symbols.
The Danish Association of the Blind first came up with the idea of using Lego bricks to teach Braille. In 2011, the group shared the idea with the Lego Foundation. Thorkild Olesen is the president of the group. Olesen is blind. He says many teachers don’t have the tools and skills to help kids learn Braille. So they teach with audio tools, such as audio books.
"Like any other people, we need to express ourselves in writing," Olesen said. “Audio is great. But it can never replace Braille. Braille is the single most important tool for us in order to learn to spell correctly and write.
