In China, safety education is becoming more and more important now. The last Monday in March is for students to learn it at school. It helps students learn more about what they should do to keep themselves safe. What are the accidents at school? Take a look.
Stampedes(踩踏), earthquakes and fires are the main accidents at school.
A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, just stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, move to one side and protect your head with your hands around.
When earthquakes happen, you can get under a desk quickly and hold on. It’ll protect you from falling things. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. In this way, you won’t breathe in smoke. Many people die in a fire, not because of the fire but smoke. It makes them cough and they can’t breathe. That’s very dangerous! Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turn around and ,sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists(靈學(xué)家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “ six sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist(心理學(xué)家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects (受試者) were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they are being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”
1.What’s the aim of the two experiments for?
A. Prove why humans have a sixth sense.
B. Explain when people can have a sixth sense
C. Show how people act while being watched in the lab.
D. Study whether humans can sense when they are stared at.
2.What does parapsychologists say that humans have to sense?
A. a natural ability B. a natural staring ability
C. a strange thinking D. a looking feeling
3.The underlined word” outcome” in the last paragraph most probably means______.
A. value B. result
C. performance D. connection
4. In the second experiment, the subjects .
A. could tell when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
B. couldn’t tell when they were stared at and when they weren’t
C. couldn’t tell when they were stared at but could tell when they weren’t.
D. could tell when they were stared at but couldn’t tell when they weren’t.
5. What can we learn from the passage?
A. People are born with a sixth sense.
B. The experiments support parapsychologists’ idea.
C. The subjects do not have a sixth sense in the experiments.
D. People have a sixth sense in all places.
