Cooking many kinds of sweets and other food is also a tradition. |
If you go to Japan in early May, you will see colorful carp flags in the sky. The flags fly to celebrate Children’s Day, which falls on May 5th. In some places, people start to fly their flags in April. Families that have boys will usually fly the flags outside their homes. They also put warrior ( 武 士 ) dolls around their homes. They do so to encourage their boys to be strong and healthy. People usually eat Kashiwa-mochi on this day. It is a kind of rice cake in a special tree leaves. The cake has sweet-tasting red bean jam (紅豆餡) inside. In most Latin American countries, there is a ceremony for girls when they turn fifteen. It’s called quinceanera. During this ceremony, the girl, who dresses up, gives candles to the fifteen most important women in her life. The candles stand for her past. Then they will have a big party. Long ago, girls would marry soon after their quinceanera. But these days, it simply stands for good wishes for girls as they get older.
