A small weak pig "Where's Papa going with the ax(斧頭)? " said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.

"Out to the hoghouse(豬圈)，" replied Mrs Arable. "Some pigs were born last night."

"I don't see why he needs an ax," continued Fern, who was only eight.

"Well," said her mother, "one of the pigs is very small and weak, and it will never grow up to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it."

"Please don't do it!" she said with eyes full of tears.

"It's not right." Mr Arable stopped walking. "Fern," he said gently. "you will have to learn to control(控制)yourself."

"Control myself?" cried Fern. "This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself." Tears ran down her face and she took hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father's hand.

"Fern," said Mr Arable, "I know more about raising pigs than you do. A weak pig makes trouble. Now run along!"

"But it's unfair," cried Fern. "The pig couldn't help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?"

Mr Arable smiled. "Certainly not," he said, looking down at his daughter with love. "But this is different. A little girl is one thing; a little pig is another."

"I see no difference," replied Fern, still hanging on to the ax. "This is the most terrible thing I have ever heard of."

A strange look came over John Arable's face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear. An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track(跟蹤) your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone through a Bluetooth wireless(無線的) connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right(don't forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you're brushing long enough. "It's kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis," says Thomas Serval, the French inventor(發(fā)明家).

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications(設(shè)備) on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. "We try to make it smart and fun," Serval says.

Serval says he got the idea by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said "yes," but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, and the U.S. is the first target market.
