My name is Jessica. I come from South Africa. Ten years ago, I began to go to a middle school in the USA because my family moved to California. I was not smart and I was very quiet. I was shaking like a leaf when the teacher asked me to have some shows in front of the class. My classmates did not want me in a group when we had groups to work. I didn't believe myself as before. I always copied my classmates' notes in the class because I couldn't understand the lessons.
In order to improve my English, I tried my best to read a lot of English books and talk with my classmates in English, but it did not work well. I felt so frustrated about my English. My classmates said that a Negro(黑人)couldn't understand white people's culture.
Those words hurt me a lot,and then I made a big decision. I dropped out of the school because I thought I was not really able to learn English at school any more. I tried to get a job, but it was very hard for me because of my poor English. I kept trying and trying. After a period, I finally got a job as a salesgirl in a store. As a result, my spoken English has improved a lot. Nowadays, there's almost no difference between Americans and me in pronunciation. I have learnt more from the experience. It is true that experience is the best teacher.
