This dog was born on Christmas Eve in 2002. He was different from other dogs because he was born with only two legs. The poor dog of course could not walk and even his mother Sarah did not want him. His first owner Michael Johnson also did not think that he could survive and he was thinking of killing him. But then, his present owner, Jude Stringfellow, met him and wanted to take care of him. She decided to teach and train this little dog to walk by himself. She called him “Faith”.
In the beginning, she put Faith on a surfboard (滑板) to let him feel the movement… Later she used peanut butter on a spoon as a lure (誘惑) and reward for him for standing up and jumping around. Even the other dog at home encouraged him to walk. Amazingly, after only six months, Faith learned to balance on his legs and jump to move forward. After further training in this snow, he could now walk like a person.
Faith loves to walk around now. Wherever he goes, he attracts people’s attention. He is fast becoming famous on the international scene and has appeared on various newspapers and TV shows. A book named With a Little Faith is now being published about him. He was even considered to appear in one of Harry Potter movies.
Jude Stringfellow, his present owner, has stopped working and plans to take him around the world to tell people “that even without a perfect body, one can have a strong will (意志)”.
Faith is a good example of the strong will and wonder of life. In life there are always unpleasant things. So, in order to feel better, you just need to look at life from another direction. I hope this message will bring fresh new ways of thinking to everyone and that everyone will appreciate and be thankful for each beautiful day.

A small ,white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years or so.
It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas.Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts—running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma…,spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.
Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling (摔跤)at the junior level at the school he attended; and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (贊助) by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.
As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (頭盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.
Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot potential (潛力) , but losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Justin loved kids—all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to inner-city church without leaving my name.
On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.

Once in a Lifetime Twice As Good
I can already hear firecrackers in the distance as the New Year begins. It is time to celebrate 2005.
This is a brand new year for those of us who follow the Western calendar. Of course, according to the
lunar calendar, the firecrackers will not sound for the New Year until February when the year of Rooster
(公雞) officially begins. I feel lucky to live in Shanghai because I can celebrate two different New Years.
I am looking forward to learning about the traditions of Chinese New Year.
At home in Canada, everyone in my family writes down their predictions (預(yù)言) for the next year.
Then we hide them away for an entire (完整的) year (no peeking!) and read them on New Year's Day.
I didn't predict that I would be living in Shanghai, China this year and if I had, I would never have predicted
that I would be enjoying life here so much. (Better luck next year with my predictions!)
I think I'll play it safe this year and predict that many new buildings will go up in my neighbourhood in
Gubei! That is a prediction that is sure to come true, here in the fastest-growing city in the world! Another
tradition at the New Year is writing down all those resolutions (決心). So here I go! I have some plans for
the New Year that I intended (打算) to keep. For example, I plan to work much harder on learning Chinese.
It is not an easy language, but living here gives me a once in a lifetime opportunity to really learn it. So, I
plan to apply myself, yes I do.
I will use a new Chinese phrase every day when I am out in the city. My second resolution is to get rid
of the habit of procrastination (拖延)! I am one of those people who always leave things to the last minute
and that has got to change! No more staying up late to finish my homework at the last minute.
Let's not call it procrastination in China, but a month's grace period on New Year' resolutions. Whatever,
Happy 2005!
