There are many different kinds of communities around the world. Communities can be urban (in a city),
suburban (near a city), or rural (in the countryside, far from a city).
Urban communities usually have many neighborhoods, where people often live close together in apartment
buildings or small houses. Streets in these neighborhoods often have lots of people and many stores and
businesses. People in urban neighborhoods often walk or take public transportation to get to places.
In suburban communities, people live in separate houses. Stores and businesses are not usually nearby,
and people often have to drive to get there. Some suburban communities have public transportation, and others
don't.
In rural communities, people often live far from each other, not in neighborhoods. There isn't usually any
public transportation, and people have to drive everywhere.
Whether in urban, suburban, or rural areas, some communities are friendly, and others aren't. For example,
in some communities, people know their neighbors, they help each other, and their children play together all the
time. In other communities, people sometimes don't even know their neighbors' names.
In the old days, most people around the world lived in small towns and villages, where they knew their
neighbors. These days, more people live in large urban communities. Experts think that in the future most
people will live in "megacities" of more than ten million people. Will there be friendly neighborhoods in these
communities in the future? Time will tell.

閱讀理解。
New York is a very large city with 8 million people. How do so many people move about the city on their
way to work and school? So, we should know something about its transport.
In New York you can travel about the city by subway, bus, taxi and car. The subway runs on the railroad
lines under the city. It crosses the city at different points and goes to all parts of the city. Traveling by subway
is the fastest way to get around the city.
The second way to travel around the city is by public bus. It's a slower way to travel. This is because the
bus moves in road traffic which is often heavy.
You can also travel around the city by taxi. This is the most expensive way, but the taxi will take you to the
very place you wish to go to. If traffic is heavy, the taxi will be slow. During the mornings and afternoons,
there is the "rush hour". This is the time when the traffic is very heavy with people going to and from work.
The last way to get around New York is using your own car. However, it's not easy for you to drive,
especially when you are driving in the "rush hour". If there is an accident on the road, you will have to wait for
a long time.
The best time to travel around the city is from 9 a.m. to 4 a. m. This is the time after the morning "rush
hour" and before the evening "rush hour". Traffic will be less crowed because most people are already at
school or at work.

B. 一小時(shí)內(nèi)所跑的路程
C. (上下班)交通高峰時(shí)刻

Computer games are just fun, I have been playing them for years, and I have become really good at it.
Some of my classmates think that I'm quite special. What's so special about that?
One day I was having lunch at school. Suddenly a girl I didn't know came and sat next to me "What do
you do for fun?" She asked. "I am a gamer," I said in a low voice. "A gamer!" She couldn't believe what I
was saying and she burst into laughter, with all the apple pie out of her mouth.
Most people think gaming is suitable for boys, but not for girls. Maybe I should cut my hair short and
change my actions so that I look like a boy.
Actually, most boys don't feel there is anything wrong with my hobby. I have met many boy gamers-
some online and some face-to-face. None of them think badly about me being a girl gamer. I have made
some good friends with them.
Playing computer games is also a kind of relaxing. I don't know why people feel strange about girls
who play games. Girls who play games do it for the same reason as boys do: it's something fun to do in
your spare time.

It is said that as the population of a city grows, so do its problems. Pollution, too many cars, and crowded
streets are just a few of these difficulties. One way to help with these problems is city trains. Trains traveling
to different parts of a city mean fewer cars and buses on our roads, cleaner air, and more open streets. In
recent years, cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai have all built city train lines.
The first city train line in China was built in Beijing. The oldest part of the train line, from Beijing Zhan to
Ping Guo Yuan was opened in 1969. Its length was 23.6 kilometres. As the city grew after 1980, so did the
need for more trains. A newer train line was built to help move people around the city centre. The 16-kilometre-
long "circle (環(huán)形) line" was finished in 1987. Since that time even more train stations have been built and today
the train lines in the city are over 50 kilometres long.
For the 2008 Olympic Games, the trains of Beijing will be very important. It is thought that most of the
people who go to watch the different sports during the Games will travel using trains.
