Smoking in indoor public places including public working places, public transport vehicles and some
other special outdoor working places has been banned (禁止) in China since January 2011. Let's look at the
following advantages of banning smoking.
First, banning smoking will not only help in saving smokers from health problems and diseases, but will
also be good for passive (被動) smokers. When the smoker is smoking in a restaurant, the people around
him are sure to breathe in the smoke and suffer from the diseases an active smoker gets. If smoking is banned,
spread of these diseases can be controlled.
Next, banning smoking will put stress on smokers to give up. Since a smoker is prevented from smoking,
he will learn how to live without smoking for long hours. When a smoker doesn't smell or see anybody around
him smoking, it might reduce his wish to smoke too. As a result, people have to give up smoking.
Smoking in public places influences non-smokers to start smoking, especially adolescents. When teens
see people around them smoking, they will follow them easily. Thus the number of teen smokers will increase.
Also asthma (哮喘) and other problems are often seen in children living around smokers. So if it is banned, these places will become safe for children and teenagers.
Looking from the economic point of view, smoking should be banned to increase work productivity (生產(chǎn)率). Employees (雇員) who smoke usually take breaks to smoke while working. So the number of hours they
put in their work is smaller.
If you see from the environment point of view, smoking should be banned. Smoking causes air pollution.
If it is banned, it will help keep the environment from getting worse.
1. _______ doesn't belong to a non-smoking place.
A. A field
B. A hospital
C. A library
D. A restaurant
2. The second paragraph mainly wants to tell us _______.
A. banning smoking is good for restaurants
B. banning smoking is good for non-smokers
C. banning smoking is good for spread of diseases
D. banning smoking is good for active smokers and passive smokers
3. How many advantages of banning smoking are mentioned in this passage?
A. Two.
B. Four.
C. Five.
D. Six.
4. According to the text, the underlined word "adolescents" means _______.
A. men
B. women
C. adults
D. teenagers
5. Which of the following statements in NOT true?
A. If smoking is banned, work productivity will increase.
B. If smoking is banned, the number of teen smokers will be larger.
C. If smoking is banned, it will make the environment become better.
D. If smoking is banned, smokers will learn how to live without smoking.

Get ready, China. The world is coming! Every day lots of foreigners come here as business people or
tourists. And even more people will come in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics. When they come to China,
we should do something to help them enjoy themselves and like China and the Chinese people. But there
are some things they may not like:
     1. Traffic problems. Cars park on sidewalks (人行道). Bus drivers drive so fast that they make
people who are trying to cross the street afraid.
     2. Queue jumping. At the post office, or even at McDonald's, people push to the front of a line
         instead of waiting.
     3. Bumping. Too many people are crowded onto buses and trains. This makes people feel terrible,
and it is not safe, either. On a bus in North America, people try to make themselves smaller and they'll
say "Excuse me" or "Sorry" if they knock into someone. In China, people make themselves bigger with
no "Sorry" or "Excuse me".
     4. Littering. I notice this everywhere. Some people throw rubbish onto the ground even when there
is a rubbish bin (箱) right next to them.

All my friends at school smoked. My dad smoked, he didn't want me to smoke, but my friends kept
saying I was stupid. They asked when I was going to grow up. So I started to smoke when I was sixteen
and after a month I couldn't stop. But two years later I could feel what smoking was doing to me. I
couldn't run far, and I coughed every morning. I got very ill and decided to stop. It wasn't easy, but now I've done it, and I feel better. Now I have money for other things.
If you smoke, you are twice as likely to die from a heart attack. And the more you smoke, the earlier
the heart attack is likely to be. For example, a 50-year-old person who smokes more than 20 cigarettes
a day, is four times more likely to have heart disease than a non-smoker of the same age.
What does smoking do to the heart? First of all, it makes the heart beat faster and increases the blood pressure. The cigarette smoke also reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood. Consequently, the heart
has to work harder, with less oxygen. Finally, your arteries will narrow faster if you smoke.
So if you want to reduce your chances of getting heart disease, the answer is easy, not to smoke.

Plants and animals, including humans, need food and water to live on. These are from the  natural
resources(資源) on Earth. To protect these resources, we need to keep the air clean and the water
drinkable. We need to keep the soil (土壤)healthy. How do we do that?
Protect the land
The soil that covers fields and farms provides much of the food we eat. Human activities  such  as
plowing(耕) fields, mining(采礦), and building highways can destroy (破壞)the land. Erosion  happen
when wind and water carry away the soil. Soil erosion can turn rich farmland into a desert  wasteland.
So does this mean we shouldn't build a highway or plow a field? Of course not. But  it does mean  we
might think about Earth-friendly ways of doing those things.
Today farmers plow their fields in different ways to prevent erosion. They try to use less water for their
crops. They keep animals from eating the growing grass in  just one  area. Farmers also plant  trees  to
prevent erosion from happening.
Save the Trees
Another human activity that damages the land is deforestation(采伐森林). People take away a large
number of trees from a forest. Millions of square kilometers of forest disappear each year. When  this
happens, many plants and animals lose their  places to live. They may die  out, or  become  very  few.
Scientists haven't even discovered all the living things in the forest. We may be losing some without even
knowing they are there. Trees absorb (吸收)and use carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)when they make food.
Environmentalists encourage careful management of the forests. They ask people to replant trees  after
they cut down the forest.
Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
People throw a piece of paper into the wastebasket after using it. The paper becomes trash.  Where
does the trash go next? Much of our trash ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋地). They take up valuable land
and sometimes pollute the water, air, and land around them. More than a third of the  trash in  landfills  is
paper. Recycling, reusing, and reducing what you throw away can cut down on the need for more landfills. In fact, we can recycle about eighty percent of household trash.
1. What does the underlined word erosion mean?
A. Plowing fields and mining
B. Cutting down trees and farming.
C. Wind and rain carrying away soil.
D. Building highways on the farmland.
2. Why do we need to save the trees?
A. To discover more new trees every year.
B. To encourage careful management of the forest.
C. To take away a large number of trees from the forest.
D. To keep good places for animals and plants to live in.
3. How much of the trash can we recycle?
A. All the trash.
B. Very little.
C. One third.
D. Four fifths.
4. What's the purpose of the author writing the passage?
A. To ask people to look for places to plant trees.
B. To tell people how to protect natural resources.
C. To show how the lands are destroyed by people.
D. To discuss ways of protecting animals and plants.
