I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice,Italy. As we enjoyed our coffee,a man entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He said to the waiter, " Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall. " We heard this order with interest and noticed that he was served one cup of coffee but he paid for two. When he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall saying M A Cup of Coffee" . Later two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. This time also, the waiter did the same. It was something unique (少見的) and confusing for us.

After a few days,we went to that coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee,a homeless man entered. He looked at the wall and said, " One cup of coffee from the wall. M The waiter served a cup of coffee to this man with respect. The man had his coffee and left without paying. Then the waiter took a piece of paper off the wall.

Now it was no surprise to us. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants (居民) of this town moved us. Just think about what that man wanted. He entered the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem (自尊) . It's a truly beautiful thing — probably the most beautiful wall in the world.

   B. His friend.

   C. The homeless man.

   D. The inhabitants of this town.

   C. The paper on the wall has artistic beauty.

Sitting still and keeping quiet seem like what students should do in class. However, putting your feet on the table, using iPads, eating and drinking may also take place in school. Americans are famous for their casual (隨便的) style.

I didn't think it was a big deal until I arrived in the US.

I was told sitting still is what you should do in middle school. That is a traditional Chinese way to show that we are paying attention to what the teacher is saying. Meanwhile,it doesn’t seem to matter in the US. When I first saw a student lying on a sofa,I was shocked and thought the teacher might feel offended (被冒犯了的) ,but she didn't. She just smiled and kept talking. Then I got used to it,and enjoyed the relaxing and comfortable position in class.

Also,we don't have uniforms at school. We can wear whatever we want. And teenagers here feel free to eat breakfast, snacks, and drink soda while teachers are talking. Teachers won’t feel upset and may even eat with them.

American teachers chat with students in class. It makes us feel closer to them, although it does mean we go off topic easily. In comparison,Chinese teachers are strict, but it helps us to focus on our task.

"You are just like your mother. M This sentence has been said countless times. Yet surprisingly, new research has found that most people are more similar to their father.

A team of scientists in the US found that we inherited (繼承) equal amounts of genes (基因) from our mother and father. But we use more of the DNA we inherited from our father. The study helps us to partly explain who we are. And more importantly,it helps us to find out whether we are likely to develop diseases.

"We know there are 95 genes that are affected by our parents," said the lead researcher. They are called imprinted genes. But now,the study has found that there are thousands of other genes that have come from our parents.

For the study, the scientists selected three different species of mice with different genes. The mice then gave birth to nine babies each. When they all reached adulthood, the team then measured every single gene of their DNA. They discovered an imbalance that swung toward their father.
