It is the duty of every man to work. The life of a lazy (懶惰的) man is of no use to himself and to others. If
the man is too lazy to work, he will usually become a unuseful man. Everyone, when he is young, should learn
some useful work.
But it is not enough for a man to learn some kind of work. He should put his heart and soul(精力) into his
work, and not waste (浪費(fèi)) his spare time. "Work while you work and play while you play" is as good rule for
young people as old.
There is no better to help to diligence(勤奮) than the habit(習(xí)慣) of early rising, and this, just like all other
good habits, is most easily formed in youth. There is an English saying "Lost time never returns." This means
that everyboby must be diligent, and make good use of time. One must study hard when one is young so that
one can make great progress, succeed in life and become useful to one's country. So we can say that diligence
is the mother of success.

bill (紙幣). Then he said to the three hundred students, "Who would like this $100 bill?" The students began to
put up their hands at once. Then he said,"I am going to give this $100 bill to one of you, but first, let me do
this." He then made the bill into a ball. Then he said,"Who wants it now?" The hands went back into the air.
"Well," he said, "What if I do this?" and he dropped it on the floor and stepped on it. He picked up the dirty,
crumpled (弄皺的) bill and said,"Who still wants it?" Hands went back into the air.

you still wanted it because it did not go down in value (價(jià)值). It was still worth $100!
Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and stepped on by the chances we take and the things

                                                                  Never give up
Since I was young, my mother has always spent lots of time sitting be-hind a sewing machine (縫紉機(jī))
with a happy look on her face. For all the three kids in our family, she has made all the clothes.
My mother makes it look so easy, but the first time I tried to make something, I just couldn't do it. I
worked too quickly, and when I finished, it looked bad. Soon, I just gave up.
This summer, I really wanted to make a dress to wear at a party. I picked out some nice cloth, and I
found a nice style in a book. I got so excited about sewing that I couldn't even sleep.
I started early the next morning. My mother was at a meeting, so if I had questions, there could be no
one to ask.
I started sewing slowly and carefully, and I tried to do everything right. When I was sewing the top, I
made the neck too small. But the rest was fine.
"I finally made it!" I shouted two hours later. And it fit! For the first time, I couldn't wear something I
had made with my own hands!
If you want to learn something, my advice is: Don't give up when you can't do it well. Start with
something easy, and try your best.

Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family,
health, friends and spirit (精神) and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a
rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce (彈跳) back.
But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glasses. If you drop one of these,
they will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your
life. How?
Don't look down on your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different and
each of us is special.
Don't let other people set goals for you. Only you know what is best for yourself.
Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop
trying
.
Don't be afraid to fight difficulties. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
    Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible. The quickest way to receive love is to give it;
the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going.
Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless. It's a treasure (珍寶) you can always carry easily.
Don't use time or words carelessly. You can't get them back.
Life is not a competition, but a trip, step by step.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery (秘密), and today is a gift: that's why we call it "the present".
1. What are the five balls of life?

But can love be bought? I'm afraid not. Love means to give, not to take, to every person, health and a long
life are probably the best thing. Well, can health and a long life be bought with money? The answer is "No".
Of all the longest living people in the world, few of them are millionaires. True friendship can't be bought,
either. In a word, where money is dreamed too much, it can cause brothers to quarrel, marriage to end, lovers
to hate, and strangers to fight. No matter how much money you have, it is still not enough to make a happy
person. If you have no one to laugh with, no one to cry for, that will be very unhappy.
