Nowadays, everybody is taking selfies (自拍照) . Frorr your best friend to your favorite pop star, selfies are becoming popular on Renren and Sina Weibo. The word " selfie" was even named word of the year by Oxford Dictiouciries in 2013.
But why do people feel the need to take them? And are llie selfies doing more harm than good to us?
According to Dr Pamela Rutledge, psychologist and director of the Media Psychology Research Center in the US,posting a selfie online shows a biological need for self-validation (自我認可) .
Humans have an area in their brains that controls social activities. Receiving positive feedback (反饋信息) cm a selfie you have posted online can be the same as someone stopping you in the street and complimenting (稱贊) you on your appearance.
The act of taking a selfie also puts you in a position of power. You are the director and the subject of your own work of art. It helps people feel in control of their self-image and can be a powerful tool.
But can it go too far?
Psychologists warn that spending too much time on selfies can affect peopled confidence, particularly for teenagers. If you are spending a lot of time choosing the perfect selfie outfit (著裝) or finding the right angle, then there could be a problem.
Likewise (同樣地) ,posting selfies online can harm your personal relationships. The UK studies found that many people find it hard to relate to people who often post selfies online.
So next time you hold your smartphone to take a quick selfie,it may be better to drop it straight back into your pocket.

We often praise science.
It explains the world and makes our lives easier with technology. One of the most exciting fields in science is artificial intelligence (人工智能) . This is an area where scientists are working on creating machines that can think like humans.
However, one of the most famous scientists has a very dark warning for us about this type of technology.
" The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," said Professor Stephen Hawking to the BBC.
Hawking is a well-known British physicist and author of the best-selling science book — A Brief History of Time. This warning came after commenting on the technology he uses to speak with. As Hawking suffers from a serious disease called ALS,he needs an AI computer to communicate. The computer learns how Hawking thinks and suggests the words he may want to use next.
This is a basic type of AI,which is very useful, yet Hawking fears the possibility of creatjng machines that can match or surpass human intelligence. And it's easy to imagine how terrible things may be. Many TV shows and films display big machines that are far cleverer than us. " Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution (進化) ,couldn’t compete," said Hawking.
But not every scientist is pessimistic (悲觀的) about AI technology. ” I believe we will remain in charge of the technology for a long time”1 said Rollo Carpenter, the creator of Cleverbot in the UK,which is a software program that remembers past conversations. "The potential" of it to solve many of the world problems will be realized."
