Now more than 40 million (百萬) foreigners around the world are learning Chinese, according to a report. The relationship (關(guān)系) between the United States and China is becoming . It has really the growth of Chinese language learning in the US.

I am Chris from the US. I am one of the many people learning . I am studying at a Confucius institute (孔子學(xué)院) in New York. There are 10 in our class. Some are over 30 years old. Some are middle school students. Our Chinese teacher Beijing. He often tells us some interesting things in China.

I think Chinese is to learn. The biggest challenge for American learners is the writing. Chinese is different from any other language in the world.

On the last day of the year, the 31st of December, people wait till 12 p.m. Everybody must have 12 grapes to eat at midnight. At each sound of the clock, we must eat a grape. But we can't ever finish eating the grapes on time! Usually when people still have some grapes in their mouths, they look at each other and start to laugh. This tradition started in Spain long ago. One year, when there were a lot of grapes, the king of Spain decided to give grapes to everybody to eat on New Year's Eve.

“Did you go skating a lot last year?” I asked. Jen shook her head and looked at me. Finally she said, “On Thanksgiving, Mom and I always went to visit some friends who lived on a farm. I especially loved seeing their big turkeys.”
