When I was 14, I left school with learning disabilities and decided to surf the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii. One morning, I met an old man, a bum, on the street corner. He asked me if I was running away from home. I told him, “Not exactly, sir, because my father had given me a ride to the train station and said, “ It is important to follow your dream, son.”

After talking for a while, he told me that he had something to show me and share with me. We walked several blocks until we reached a public library.

The bum asked me to sit down and wait for a moment. Later he returned with some old books and sat beside me. Then he said, “There are two things that I want to teach you, young man. Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you. I’ll bet you think I’m a bum, don’t you?” I said, “I guess so, sir.”

“Well, young man, I've got a little surprise for you. I am one of the richest men in the world. But a year ago, when my wife passed away, I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. For the past year I have been going from city to city doing just that. Number two is to learn how to read, for there is only one thing that people can’t take away from you, and that is your wisdom(智慧). ”At that moment, he gave me the books he’d pulled from the shelves.

In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister was very ill. He had been attacked by a sick dog that had rabies(狂犬病), a very dangerous disease. His doctor tried to help him, but there was no cure for rabies at that time. The doctor told Joseph’s parents that perhaps there was one man who could save Joseph’s life. His name was Louis Pasteur.

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access(入口) to the Internet. Besides, they will be able to use e-mail to "speak" with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!

Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable(可行的). As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. Besides, the portable(手提的) computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, "Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything."

1.The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to _____.

A. use for their schoolwork B. access the Internet

C. work at home D. connect them to libraries

2.Why is the word "speak" in the second paragraph in quotation marks (引號(hào))?

A. They don't really talk. B. They use the computer language.

C. Laptops have speakers. D. None of the above reasons is correct.

3.Which of the following is true about Westlake College?

A. All teachers use computers. B. 1500 students have laptops.

C. It is an old college in America. D. Students there can do everything.

4.What can we infer(推斷) from the passage?

A. The program is successful B. The program is not workable.

C. The program is too expensive. D. We don't know the result yet.
