By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it’s not only how much we eat,but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins(維生素) and other nutrients(營養(yǎng)物)that enter our body.

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw(生的) vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene(番茄紅素), the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”

Many facts decide how the vegetables do good to people’s health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling(煮)was better for carrots than frying(油炸)or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

I still remember the true story that happened to me many years ago. It started while my family were on vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, but I needed to do some studying. I carefully put all my important papers and books in a large bag.

After a long drive to New York, we found a motel, a place for travelers and their cars, with a really good price. So we decided to stay there for a week. On the second day, after visiting some interesting places and having a big dinner, we returned to the motel. It was about ten o’clock in the evening, and I wanted to study. However, I couldn’t find my paper bag anywhere. I was quite sure that I had put it in the room. Suddenly, I realized the cleaner had taken it out with the rubbish.

I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the cleaner on duty that day. They told me all the cleaners had left for the day. They showed me where the rubbish bins were instead of offering me any help. I walked out of the motel with a flashlight (電筒). I saw three large rubbish bins standing in the dark. 1 had to look for my bag very carefully. But I didn’t have any luck. I almost wanted to give up. Visiting a new place can be a scary experience for a lot of people because it could include speaking in a language that most people are not comfortable with— English. So how can you keep away from this kind of situation? Learn how to speak English smoothly. Here are 4 English speaking tips you must know to become a more confident English speaker.

1. Listen first.

One of the best English speaking tips is to listen carefully every day. Most people turn to textbooks to study English grammar rules, but you cannot learn the correct English pronunciation of the words just by reading them. You don’t need to learn grammar in detail because this prevent you from speaking English well.

Instead, listen to how native(母語) English speakers pronounce and watch their mouths’ movements. Also watch English shows and movies to build on your English accen(口音)and make your vocabulary(詞匯)better.

2. Practice makes perfect.

Studies show that it’ll probably take three months to practice every day in order to have strong mouth muscles(肌肉). Read aloud in English for 30 minutes a day in front of the mirror, which helps with your English communication skills.

3. Think in English.

One of the most effective English speaking tips is to think in English. What most English learners do in the early stages of learning is that they think of what they have to say in their native language, translate and then say it in English. This can be tiring in mind.

If your goal is to speak English smoothly, you need to learn “thinking” in English. Make up the sentences in English as you think about them before saying them.

4. Be more confident.

All these English speaking tips will be useless if you are not confident in your English speaking skills.

Try to relax if you’re speaking English. When you speak at a normal speed, you’ll discover that you’ll be able to pronounce the words correctly and people will understand you.
