Countless people long to make a difference this holiday season, yet they don’t realize that opportunities(機遇) to make a difference are everywhere. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Organize a blank drive
It is cold outside, but imagine how thousands of homeless people may feel without a home of their own, or even a blanket to keep them from the cold. Organize a blank drive for your local homeless, and ask around for donations!
Practice random(隨意的) acts of kindness
I’ll never forget the time when I went to pay for my Dr. Pepper, but the nurse stopped me, saying my bill was paid by an anonymous(匿名的) guest. It’s this random act of kindness that restores(恢復(fù)) my faith in humanity. Bless someone by paying for their drink at Starbucks, or praising them! If you live somewhere where it snows, shovel your neighbour’s snow out of their driveway for them! Whether it is as simple as praise or as complex(復(fù)雜的) as paying the bill, you’ll never know how far your influence will reach.
Say thank-you
Just a simple thank-you can make someone’s day, especially if they feel like their work is never noticed. Cultivate(培養(yǎng)) a smile on their face by being sincere and thankful for all that they do.
Use your talents to help the community
The best way to show your thanks for people is by using the talents and skills you have to bless others. For me, I love to coordinate(協(xié)調(diào)) events and write, and so my way of reaching out to the community is through writing articles and creating awareness(意識) about problems we face today. If you can bake, make some delicious cookies for people to enjoy! If you can knit, put your talents to use by making clothes for children in foster care(寄養(yǎng)中心). Any talent can be used to help the community in meaningful ways.
Wish you a happy, healthy and helpful holiday season.

We have four chickens: Pecky, Buckbeak, Mayonnaise and Cornflake. My husband, Andrew, made their coop(籠子). It’s beautifully made.
What’s more interesting is that he made it with our sons and daughter. They spent several weekends in the garage(車庫). He gave them tools because he believed it was important that they could actually make something. He slowly helped them and together, they made the coop. They also made the mistakes of learning — a board cut too short, nails smashed(打碎) by hammers — but in the end, Andrew did some tricks and the coop looked perfect.
The chickens love their perfectly imperfect home and we like to give them free range(放養(yǎng)) of the yard. Yesterday, they ran around the lawn(草坪). We needed to go downtown, knowing that chickens wouldn’t go very far. When we got back, my son, Gordon, ran to check on them. There were Mayonnaise, Cornflake and Buckbeak, looking a mess. Pecky was nowhere to be seen.
With Andrew, we searched the yard and found feathers by the trees. More feathers littered the yard. By this time, Gordon started to worry; Pecky was his favorite chicken and his eyes got watery.
Andrew picked Gordon up and held him. As we stood there, accepting that we were now a three-chicken family, we heard it — a soft clucking(咯咯聲) sound. Andrew put Gordon down and they looked under a bush. There was Pecky, a half-naked chicken. She looked weird(怪異的), but she was fine. Andrew gently gathered her up and returned her to the coop.
The next day Andrew had the kids back in the garage. They planned to fence(把……圍起來) a bigger area for maximum(最大化) chicken freedom and safety. The kids believed that the chickens should be closed in, safe from everything that likes to eat chickens. Andrew disagreed. He believed that we should be more careful, letting the chickens out when we were in the yard. He encourages our kids to take risks. He sees that the risk of living life — by having the freedom to walk slowly around and dig for small insects in the garden — is better than the safety of a prison(監(jiān)牢).
Andrew and the kids are planning their next building project. I’m sure it will include the wisdom of a father who knows how to love through the act of giving freedom.
1.What does Paragraph 2 tell readers?
A.The family is not good at making things.
B.The kids were easily prevented by their mistakes.
C.The writer’s husband is impatient with his children.
D.The kids managed to build the coop with their father’s help.
2.What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 to 5?
A.The family didn’t know how to keep chickens.
B.The family loves the chickens as their family.
C.The family feels troubled by the chickens.
D.The family didn’t look after the chickens well.
3.What kind of chicken home will they probably make?
A.A stronger coop made out of the old one.
B.A bigger coop where there is no fence or anything.
C.A bigger place where the chickens will be safer.
D.An enclosed(封閉的) place with where the chickens are well protected.
4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Children made the mistakes of learning while making the coop.
B.In Paragraph 2, tricks means a way of doing something that works well.
C.The family lost a chicken because they went downtown and let the chickens out.
D.Andrew thinks that the risk of living life is better than the safety of a prison.
5.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the story?
A.To show people how to love animals.
B.To show people some tips for keeping chickens.
C.To tell kids to stay calm when bad things happen.
D.To share the wisdom that comes keeping chickens.

If you dropped a piece of fruit on your computer keyboard, would you think about eating it again? What if you dropped it in the toilet? Bacteria(細菌) can live everywhere, even in some unexpected places.
If you eat at your computer, sneeze on your keyboard, or sit down to surf the Internet without first washing your hands, your computer keyboard could be bad for your health. According to the US National Research Centre, the average computer carries 400 times more bacteria than a toilet bowl(抽水馬桶) does.
Could one of the dirtiest things in your home be right in your hand? Yes. The TV remote control. It gets dropped on the floor, put on the sofa and everyone in the house holds it. Scientists found that about half of the tested remote controls carry the cold virus(病毒).
Don’t forget your toothbrush. Do you put it in the bathroom? Studies show that flushing(抽水沖洗) the toilet releases(釋放) bacteria in the air. Bacteria can remain in the air for at least two hours. They may pollute your toothbrush. You can find ways to solve this problem. Try to keep your toothbrush far from the toilet. Make sure that it is in an upright position after each use. It’s also important to change your toothbrush every three months.
Here are some other places to watch out for:
At home
The kitchen is one of the places with the most bacteria — more than the bathroom. Dishcloths and kitchen sponges(海綿) are great places for bacteria since they are always wet after being used. Try to make them dry.
At school
When you put your schoolbags on the floor or in the bus, many bacteria can live on the bottom(底部) of it. Try to clean your schoolbag often.
In public places
Escalator handrails(電梯扶手), shopping cart handles(推車手柄), public books and magazines are top bacteria carriers. That’s why the first thing to do when getting home is to wash your hands.
Yes, bacteria are everywhere. But don’t be too afraid to touch those things. Most of bacteria are harmless. Just remember to wash your hands regularly. It is the most useful way to protect yourself from bacteria and viruses.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the Chinese seven - string zither(七弦琴), also known as the guqin, one of the four arts — along with go, calligraphy and painting. It first appeared over 3,000 years ago and represents China’s solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the guqin had only five strings, representing the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Later, in the Zhou dynasty, King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son. King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambience(環(huán)境氣氛) was important in playing the Chinese zither. Usually, it was practiced in quiet setting and never for public performance.
Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes(回音) from the mountains, until the musician found himself at one with nature. Playing it in snow was also a favorite pastime for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also, a night with moonlight was considered ideal for playing the guqin. Wang Wei(701-761), a highly talented man of the Tang dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually around three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes long. Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements, Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute.
Now, there are fewer than one thousand well - trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters. The original number of several thousand pieces has greatly reduced to only a hundred works by today. The guqin and its music was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(人類非物質(zhì)文化遺產(chǎn)) in 2003.
