Sometimes, it is great fun to show people that they are important through some acts of kindness. My daughter Cindy, an 8-year-old girl, was kind of shy in the past, but one thing makes her become very active and outgoing.

Last month, Cindy felt uncomfortable in her stomach, so I took her to the hospital. When we were waiting outside the waiting room, we saw a lady standing just beside us. She was very depressed and worried. I didn’t know her, so I said nothing to her. However, Cindy gave a smile card to the lady and said, “I hope everything goes well with you.” It brought tears to the lady’s eyes. She hugged Cindy and said nothing. Later, Cindy gave out five more smile cards that day.

Last Monday, I did some shopping with Cindy in a supermarket. After we bought what we wanted, we went to the counter (t柜臺(tái)). To my surprise, I couldn’t find my wallet and I didn’t know what to do. Cindy was so worried that she wanted to cry. At that time, a lady came to us and paid for us. Oh, she was the lady to whom Cindy gave a smile card in the hospital. I said “thank you” to her. She said, “I was moved by your daughter’s kindness.”

Music always interests us. But do you like music that is mainly used in stores? People call it “background music”. Recorded background music first found its way in factories, shops and restaurants in the US, but it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now many stores like to play this kind of music.

Why do they use it? Well, because they want to make customers stay longer. Then customers may buy some goods if they stay longer. In fact, some background music is soft and gentle. However, some background music is too loud. Many shoppers say that they don’t like any background music. When the music is being played, they may get angry at it and they will walk out of the shop as soon as they hear it.

According to a survey, three quarters of shoppers notice the background music when they go into a store. If they like the background music, they will stay longer as a result. They say they will come to the store again. However, fifty percent of shoppers will leave the shop because they don’t like the background music. They even say that they will be less likely to return to the store.

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful. you need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover (殘留物) into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper (包裝材料) into a recyclable waste bin; third, throw the single-use cup and straw (吸管) into a dry waste bin.

Sound complex (復(fù)雜的)? You’ll have to get used to it. From July 1 on, people in Shanghai are required to sort (將……分類) their garbage (垃圾) according to strict rules. Many other cities in China are planning to create similar garbage -sorting rules.

Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year. Most of this waste is buried (填埋) in landfills (垃圾填埋場(chǎng)), which may pollute water and soil! Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.

In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and fertilizer (肥料). But in order to recycle efficiently (有效率地), we need to sort our garbage.

Can’t garbage processing companies do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the troublesome (棘手的) task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?

1.How many steps do people in Shanghai need to follow if they want to throw away a cup of milk tea?

A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.

2.When are people in Shanghai required to sort garbage?

A.From July 1 on. B.From May 2 on.

C.From August 1 on. D.From January 2 on

3.Why should we sort our garbage?

A.Because people produce less waste. B.Because recycling garbage is easy.

C.Because no one recycles garbage. D.Because of the increasing amount of waste.

4.What can’t wet garbage be used to make?

A.Gas. B.Heat. C.Fertilizer. D.Plastic.

5.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Our waste should be recycled B.We should sort our garbage

C.Pour out leftover into a waste bin D.We are using up space for new landfills

Are you nearsighted (近視的)? Do you wear glasses? Many of you may say “yes”.

In fact, China’s young people have the highest rate (率) of nearsightedness in the world. More than 70 percent of middle school students in China are nearsighted.

In August, a plan to solve this problem was introduced. It aims to cut down the rate of nearsightedness for middle school students to less than 60 percent by 2030. Schools across the country are taking action to meet this goal.

Luoyang Experimental School in Henan started with its desks. It has designed (設(shè)計(jì)) desks with a board above the desktop (桌面). The board stops students from lowering (降低) their heads too close to their desktops. More than 400 students have used them so far. More students will use them soon. Similarly, the High School Affiliated (附屬的) to Renmin University Chaoyang Branch School is now providing desks and chairs according to students’ heights. Studies have shown that proper desk height can prevent (預(yù)防) nearsightedness.

Spending more time outside can also reduce (減少) nearsightedness. The Yucai middle School makes sure that its students play outside for at least 80 minutes every day. We have a P.E. class and a 20-minute break in the morning and afternoon to do exercises, "said Sun Zihan, 14.

Staring at screens can also hurt our eyes. Beijing 101 Middle School has a solution to this problem. In its classrooms, there are special boxes for storing students’ cellphones. “We have to hand in our cellphones every morning and get them back after school,” said Huang Jiameng, 15.
